OK I will be the first to acknowledge that I do it. Virtually everyone in California does it. The more I think about it I find it kind of odd. It is: the where do you live game (escort or not). And it goes something like this.

1- So where in California are you?

2- In Southern California

3- Oh, where abouts?

4- Near Los Angeles

5- Where in Los Angeles?

6- Well near Los Angeles, Orange County

7- Hmmm Cool where in OC then?

8- Coastal

9- ahh Coastal, where abouts?

10- A little bit South of Disneyland

11- Cool, so you're in Anaheim?

12- Not exactly Anaheim closer to Costa Mesa

13- Where in Costa Mesa?

14- Well, on the boarder of Costa Mesa and Santa Ana

15- Near what cross streets?

16- Trask and Harbor

17- Oh I thought that was Stanton?

18- Well, technically it probably is

19- Ok I was just wondering, I am in the Bay area

20- Really, where in the Bay area are you?

;-)

That was a riot! I've done the same thing. It probably could happen anywhere, not just California.

In your example, I think the fact is that most Bay Area people would never have HEARD of Stanton, though, much less be able to pinpoint an intersection there. Of course if the Bay Area person were originally FROM O.C. ...

I'm the reverse-- in So Cal but originally from the Bay Area.

Well, that's a lot better than the #1 question conversation when first meeting someone in St. Louis.....

1) So, what hi-school did you go to? (I kid you not, we ALL joke about it here!)

What's so funny is, they ask me, and I'll tell them "Santa Monica High" not even volunteering that it is really in CA. Then I love watching their face as they try to figure it out, then pretend they know exactly where it is...

the next topic of conversation...the weather.....

ahh, but I love it here nonetheless....

Sure enough. I've had the same discussions in the DC, NYC, and Chicago areas.

The only time it's been short-circuited was when we realized I could walk out my back door, down the alley to the street, and be at his front door. ;-)

I'm actually *living* the LA thing right now. I'm relocating. People ask where I'm moving and they shriek when I say "LA area", but if I say "Ventura County" they seem to take it OK but have NO CLUE where it is. ;-)

(I'll be living in LA county but in an area that has more in common with Ventura county. The only thing that area has in common with LA, aside from a tax base, is LAX.)

Welcome to California deej :) Sounds like you'll be living in the Valley. If so, that tax base might not have much in common with Los Angeles in the coming few years. You'll even get an opportunity to vote on it.

If I remember a post you made about a month ago correctly, you do not drive. It's hard to live anywhere in Southern California if you don't get behind the wheel or have your own limo :p
