When horrible things happen to us guys like Tom's fanged dracula attack, my instincts apart from shock, are that someone should organise a whip-round to compensate for some of the lost earnings.

In this profession, (at least in the UK) we are obviously rather outisiders when it comes to getting things like sickness and health benefits, and i guess that in the states, its important to make private provision for contingencies such as illness or, alas, attack.

I've often wondered about whether anyone would be interested in some sort of - 'health insurance' where perhaps escorts could contribute $10 a month, and in return recieve something to tide them over if things did ever go seriously wrong in any respect.

Is this cloud cukoo land?? Notoriously difficult to organise, sure, but where else can we go when things go belly up - and god it scares me to reflect on how precarious some aspects of this life are!!

What, for instance, if the organisers of this site charged a nominal fee - or asked for voluntary contributions from both escorts and clients, to be used only to help out in serious contingencies like Tom's??

RE: Is there a market for escort 'insurance'

Hey Jon,

You got a good head on your shoulders, thinking about a health plan is a good idea... I don't know how it works in the UK, but here in the USA, there are "self-employed" health insurance plans. These can only be applied for by showing proof of a reported income which you pay taxes on. Since that is not the case in your situation, are you talking about a group plan sponsored by patrons or websites? If so, it will never happen. Health insurance is very costly and a major issue in most workers' contract negociations. It's a major benefit...Perhaps you can bring this isssue up on topics for "escorts' and see how others handle this important matter.

Since you are traveling to the USA this month, why not start by taking out health insurance for your trip. Good luck...

UNIONIZE!

I think its high time for escorts and bodyworkers to form a union. Price setting, group health insurance, lawyer retainer. Too bad it will never happen, but its a nice thought.

RE: UNIONIZE!

Actually may surprise you to know that there is a relatively newly formed union of sex workers in the UK - or I think that it might be a european thing.

No chance of price setting or coordinating industrial action unfortunately!!! but I would expect that retention of a lawyer and some health advice might be available. i understand that the main purpose might be to lobby for legal rights and protection for an occupation that is on the margins of legality - in the UK anyway. there are costs to better recognition - like having to pay tax, but the ability to secure health insurance and such like might outweigh these downsides.

And Cooper - why didn't I read you mail before I left for NY. I lost my credit card on the way over, and they want to charge me $200 for an emergency replacement. Its a good thing that I'm managing to drum up so much work in NY.

I think that there is a link (or at least info) on the sex workers union on the web site of the UK based "working Men's project" the web address of which I can't seem to locate right now - but would be happy to find it for anyone who might be interested.
