BREAKING NEWS: Ellen DeGeneres Announces She Is Leaving 'American Idol'

1 hour and 24 minutes ago

After only one year behind the judges' table on "American Idol," Ellen DeGeneres is leaving the show.

"A couple months ago, I let FOX and the 'American Idol' producers know that this didn't feel like the right fit for me," Ellen said in a statement issued to Access Hollywood on Thursday. "I told them I wouldn't leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to figure out where they wanted to take the panel next."

Ellen didn't add much.

According to this site (right here), the replacements are going to be Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.

Sounds boring.

I think you need a funny, insult-spewing type to replace Simon - I was really hoping for Howard Stern.

That's the only thing that could save this dreary, dying old monster at this point.

Perhaps they can start a literacy campaign instead...:)

My thinking AI has just run its course! Slowly as with other "Entertainment" Shows the Original CAST will be changed to keep the Demographics for as long as possible!

Will I miss Howdy Doody? Hell No..although I lost interest in AI a while back already!

I do not watch television at home, and rarely in hotels (unless I am out of the country), so perhaps you guys can enlighten me...

Do any of these "winners" really end up becoming celebrities / successful entertainers? I sometimes hear buzz for a while, but then they seem to fade away...but perhaps I am just too far out of "pop" culture to know.

carrie underwood is pretty much the only one that's ever mentioned on a regular bases

Actually, Kelly Clarkson and Chris Daughtery are two of the best-selling musical artists on the planet now.

It's almost a curse to win (last I heard Taylor Hicks was doing regional dinner theater), but number two has tended to fare well.

Adam Lambert didn't win but he's certainly making a run at a successful career. Gay Clay didn't win but he's been working steadily on Broadway. David Archuletta didn't win, but he's released two CDs and has some sort of following.

To be honest, anyone who is really viable as a "big star" doesn't need AI to make it.

Clarkson has sold 10.6 million albums, 15.9 million in track sales and she has been played on the radio almost 4.3 million times.

In second place, the first country singer to win "Idol," Carrie Underwood, has outsold Clarkson in album sales, but the original idol still has her beat in track sales and radio plays.

however clarkson has been at it 3 years longer than underwood

Also not here...but out of fairness I stopped looking after the top 100...

That's a list of sales for current albums. Neither Clarkson nor Daughtery have a new album released.

By your reasoning, Rick Ross is the second highest-selling musical artist in the world. Is that what you believe?

The other list you posted was total sales in a lifetime. To make that list, you have to be selling albums for decades. Neither Clarkson nor Daughtery have.

From Clarkson's Wikipedia page:

Clarkson has released four albums to date: her
double-platinum
debut album Thankful (2003), her
multi-platinum
second album Breakaway (2004) (which has won two Grammy Awards), My December (2007), and her latest album All I Ever Wanted (2009). Her albums have sold
over 10.5 million copies in the United States.
[1] . . .
over 20 million albums worldwide
, becoming the highest-selling Idol winner. . . . .

Clarkson held the distinction of having the highest-selling American Idol album in the United States until November 2009, when Carrie Underwood claimed that title by a narrow margin of 100,000 albums. Clarkson, however, remains the highest-selling American Idol alum overall,
with around 23 million albums sold worldwide
.[7]

And from Daughtery's page:

Their self-titled debut album was released in 2006. The disc reached number one for two non-consecutive weeks on the Billboard Top 200, outsold Idol winner Taylor Hicks's debut album,
sold more than four million copies
and was named the number one selling album of 2007 by Billboard. Their album is also the
fastest-selling debut rock album in Soundscan history
.[6]

I trust this puts your concerns to rest.
