I checked through the archives and did some searching on Portland, Oregon - but didn't find much new about the town.

I'll be up there in a few weeks for 3-4 days - and I'm interested in any feedback on the area in general, restaurants, any specific gay "area", fun bars/clubs? I'm staying in a hotel downtown near SW Main/Broadway, seems like a lot is within walking distance.

I'm *not* looking for any escorts this trip as I'm bringing a friend along with me, but thought it would be helpful to scout out the scene ahead of time.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Well,

I am not sure what you are used to, but I would not expect too much from Portland as far as the "scene" goes.

The main "area" is Stark Street, which in my opinion is a little seedy. Feel free to PM me if you want more specific info. Just be prepared that Portland is pretty small potatoes compared to other cities. There are a few restaurants scattered around the city such as Starkey's or Hobo's but I would only rate the food as average. There is one drag club, Darcell's which is close to Hobo's which is considered a Portland Institution by many (if you are into that sort of thing). There are other bars sprinkled around town, but generally nothing too inspiring. Many places are Gay friendly. I would say that the Portland mainstream is pretty accepting, and that is probably it's most notable feature. The restaurants, bars, escorts and etc. are not worthy of much praise. There are a few bath houses if you are into that.

There are plenty of good restaurants in town worth trying, but they are not particularly gay establishments. I think one of the best Northwest inspired restaurants is Higgins:

1239 Southwest Broadway

Portland, OR 97205-2915

(503) 222-9070

Greg Higgins is a great guy and while he is not gay, the restaurant is friendly to all walks of life.

If you are in the Pearl, and like French Cuisine, there is Fenouil:

900 Northwest 11th Avenue

Portland, OR 97209-3206

(503) 525-2225

$$$$

There are many great small places, A personal favorite is Besaws:

2301 Northwest Savier Street

Portland, OR 97210

(503) 228-2619

Great Breakfast, but equally great dinner. Breakfast is always crazy, but dinner is generally more mellow.

$$

If you like Gardens, Portland has two worthy of note. The Lan Su Chinese is very nice in China Town (avoid most restaurants in china town except for the Golden Horse). Also the Japanese Gardens in Washington Park are also very nice.

If you like beer, there are many micro breweries and pubs. Some better than others.

Not knowing you and your tastes, it is hard to go further. There is something for everyone, and every budget, but it is spread out.

Hope this helps

I really enjoyed the area when I visited a few years ago. People were super friendly. I know u r not looking for escorts, but when I was there these two guys gave me the most amazing "lomi lomi" massage I had ever had. They don't seem to be advertising now - but if you ever have the chance, jump at it, it took a few hours and it was amazing.
