I just read an article in the NY Times about Terry Berg, the young gay intern in the Green Lantern comic book.

When I was young, I was an avid comic book reader and favored DC Comics (Superman, Batman, Flash, Justice League, Justice Society, Legion of Superheros and, yes, Green Lantern) over Marvel. My friends did not all share my preference. :-)

But regardless of which set of characters you favored, the comics routinely dealt with topical stories of the day and certainly helped to shape our thoughts.

I'm pleased to see that DC continues to move forward. What they're doing with this story is impressive.

Terry has caused quite a lot of controversy over on the DC Comics message boards, including several flame wars. The current writer of Green Lantern is Judd Winnick. He also has the distinction of being a cast member from the Real World San Francisco (yes, the one with Puck). Judd also authored teh book Pedro and Me, a tribute to his friend and fellow cast member the late Pedro Zamora.

Judd married his castmate Pam Ling. He also is the author of the comic Exiles over at Marvel.

and BG? JSA is the absolute best comic out there right now. Most of the old JSAers have passed away: the Atom, Black Canary, Dr. Fate, Dr. Mid-Nite, Hourman, Huntress, Mr. Terrific, Sandman, Spectre, Starman, Star-Spangled Kid and the Golde Age Wonder Woman (most recently). The Flash, Green Lantern (now Sentinel), Hawkman, Wildcat, Johnny Thunder and Power Girl are still active, along with a bunch of new heroes with strikingly familiar names.

The Golden Age Wonder Woman, Queen Hippolyta, died during the Our Worlds at War crossover. She saved the Earth from being destroyed, but at the cost of her life. Her daughter, Diana (the current Wonder Woman) was there when her mother passed on.

The current GL's predecessor, Hal Jordan, was in his 40's. Unfortuantely, Hal went insane in GL #48 - 50, a little story arc called "Emerald Twilight". He killed some fellow GLs and stole the power of the Guardians of the Universe to become the villain Parallax. Hal eventually redeemed himself duting the Final Night crossover by using his power to reignite the sun. Now, Hal stars as the Spectre in that ongoing series.

If any of you have ever seen Justice League ADventures on the Cartoon Network, you'll know that their GL is an African American named John Stewart. John becomes a Greeen Lantern once again in GL #155 and takes Kyle's place in the regular Justice League comic.

Of course, if you want a REALLY old Green Lantern, the GL from the 40's, now known as Sentinel, appears as a supporting character in Green Lantern as well as in the JSA series. He's in his 80's, but doesn't look a day over 50.
