I build websites for escorts and I would like to find out what makes a good escort websites.

Personally I am quite minimalist and I favour sites that load quickly and are discreet (in other words no flash and absolutely no music).

So, folks what makes a good escort website ?

What is your favourite escort website (not necessarily the website of your favourite escort :-) )?

Thanks for your input

This is an issue of interest to clients as well as escorts. After all, websites are addressed to clients.

Can you give us some URLs so that we can see your work? It's easier to discuss visual things with visual evidence. Even "minimalist" may mean one thing to one person and something else entirely to another.

I'm with you on minimalist, but there's such a thing as TOO minimalist.

Sound absolutely should NOT be used. I generally keep the speakers turned off because of websites that assault you with annoying looping music with no warning. It's a bandwidth hog and does nothing to impart information.

I don't mind Flash animations when they're done well, but for God's sake include a "skip intro" link if it's gonna go on for a while.

I rather like talvindemachio.com, although it's a bit over-designed. It's easy to navigate, has the content you'd expect, and responds quickly.

I've been guilty of building sites that seem just fine on a broadband connection but on dialup I wonder "what was I THINKING???"

In the New York area, the best is Campus. You can click on it from this site. Mike owns and operates the place to everybody's satisfaction, it seems. He's been perfect for me over the last three or four years.

Please **never** forget that many (perhaps most) of us still don't have access to a broadband connection at home. And browsing an escort's website at the office is usually not recommended.

Even though I have a broadband connection at home, nothing raises my ire faster than a site that loads slowly due to too many bells and whistles. My other pet peeve is pop-ups. Even Ebay currently has a pop-up trying to sell wine that comes up as soon as you try to leave their webpage, asking you, "Are you sure you want to leave?" Because I buy and sell lots of stuff on Ebay, I had it as my default screen when IE loads, but I'm now changing to something else (probably this website) because this really annoys me.

A good escort website provides the vital stats, plus good photographs of the escort, and some historical/personal detail about the escort, likes and dislikes, etc. An easy to access email link is also a plus. There is an old saying, "We only get one chance to make a good first impression>" If a site is too cumbersome or difficult to use or slow to load, most folks in this "Age of impatience" will move on.

Here's a scary thing, Los.... there are many young hotshot web designers out there who have never experienced the web on dial-up. They think broadband is a god-given right.

I've had several working for me in the recent past and really had to force them to restrain themselves. Before they gave me a design to review, I always asked if it had been tested on dial-up because I'd be testing it there. More often than not, they'd come back later with a slimmed down version.

I come from the "less is best" point of view. (I have a cable modem and there are more than a few sites that are slow to load. :( I shudder to think of how painfully slow they must be for dial-up users. x()

I like sites that:

1) are easy to navigate;

2) allow me to skip the flash introduction;

3) don't assult my ears with loud or annoying music. (I'm with deej ... I usually keep my speakers turned off. I can't tell you how many times I've jumped right out my chair because of an unexpected assault on my ears. x()

4) don't contain pop-ups or exit consoles. (I try to avoid those sites that cause my pop-up-stopper's task bar short cut icon to blink like a Chistmas Tree.)

5) let us get to know a little about the escort. (A few pictures would be nice. They don't have to be XXX or even nude. IMHO, underwear shots can be very hot. :9 }>)

6) have easy to find contact information.

Just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.

I agree, as far as I am concerned music and flash are out (I have been nicknamed mr "Skip Intro"). WHen looking at log of sites I find it very interesting to notice that in site with a lot of content about the escort, users tend to read it. In sites where the "about me" is not much longer than the stats users usually skip that part and go straight to photos.

Any word from escorts ?

Yes it does help, we like the same things. You are proving me right. Great for my eqo, thanks :-)

Will,

I asked a generic question, not a comments on my sites.

However, if you insist... (says the blushing bride :-) )

http://www.jonguy.com has a lot of information about jon and a lot of photographs

http://hop.to/philippe has less info about philippe (the carousel will probably disappear when the site is up for review)

a new one of a guy who has not been reviewed here (yet) http://www.blueyedtop.com has even less info about the escort and more photo

The style of the three individuals is also very different. I think the sites match their stile, but...do you really want to know more about the escort or are you just interested in photos ? Or to put it in another way, are you researching or just plainly window shopping (Will, I do not mean you specifically)

Once again, thanks for your input

In general, I find all three sites informative and easy to use. Jon's is absolutely over the top with bad poetry and self-indulgent prose. Who can read all that stuff?

I like Phillippe's the best. I like it's elegant, black-and-white format, the simplicity of the layout, the ample-but-not-too-ample amount of information.

The third one is also nice, although I think the built-in slide-show or mosaic sequences are more a hindrance than a help. When I want to see photos, I want to see them on my terms, not on the page designer's. It's irritating to have to keep outguessing what the program is going to do next.

I think in all three cases it might be helpful to the user if there were an arrow or an indication of "next" in the lower righthand corner. That gives the sense that there is a sequence to the pages, a kind of narrative; and that in itself conveys the impression of someone who has his act together.

I noticed that in none of these three sites is there any mention of a fee. It would be better, I think, if there were some indication. Before contacting an escort, a client ought not to have to wonder whether he can afford him.

Finally, I'd also like some plain indication of who these guys are. Not rambling excurses on the meaning of life, but some indication of their education, their interests, and their ambitions in life. For instance, it would make a great big difference to some clients to read that an escort really enjoys opera -- or rock, or folk -- music. It would be interesting to know what magazines he reads, what books. That kind of thing gives us more to work with than the pictures alone.

As regards the pictures, and whether we're window shopping or being serious: if there weren't a relationship between the two, then neither Harry Winston nor Tiffany would risk putting millions of dollars in precious stones in their Fifth Avenue windows every day. If you really like what you see, then you're far more likely to go inside.

Hope this is helpful. It's really nice work, I think.

One more comment....

NO BLINKING!

An occasional animated gif can be cute, but I've seen sites where there's so much motion you get seasick before you figure out what the page says.

I try to keep web pages I set up as browser-neutral as possible.

I don't like "this page best viewed with..." labels; that sort

of thing is not at all in the original spirit of the WWW.

I don't care for most use of Flash animation. It's fine for

animated cartoons and the like, but I find it annoying when

it's used for the sake of flashiness.

Most animated .gifs are pointless, but occasionally they have

a place. For one of my favorites, see the portrait at the top

of http://www.lileks.com/money/index.html (give it 7 seconds).

I read your post after having just closed the NY Times site again.

I find the new ever-more animated ads that are showing up on sites to be extremely distraction, which, of course, they're meant to be. They're designed to draw you eyes and force you to view the advertiser's message.

The NY Times site is full of these, on every page other than their home page.

As soon as I go to such a page, if the ad is annoying or distracting, I immediately pull in the edge of the IE window, covering the ad. For ads that are impossible to cover in this manner, I've started keeping a folded (i.e., opaque) piece of paper next to my laptop. I simply cover the annoying ads while I read the content I want to read. I try to do so without ever looking at the ad itself. I figure that advertisers who use these tactics can get their message across to other viewers; I refuse to play along.

There's an analog in the non-Web world: whenever I get a new magazine, I immediately go through the magazine and pull and discard all of the small insert cards and also the large pages printed on heavy stock. I find these advertising vehicles to be annoying when flipping through a magazine and I don't want to be bothered by them. I don't look at them, either.

But I gladly look at normal ads on sites and in magazines. I think responsible (dull) advertisers should be rewarded. :-)

High five, babe. I'm EXACTLY the same way!

After going on record here as having a preference for minimalist sites, since they load quickly and don't have so many annoyances, I just visited the web site of an escort who just registered as a participant here, and think it is a stellar example of a site with lots of content and panache without the cumbersome goodies that take forever to load. The escort in question is Benjamin Nicholas and the URL for his site is:

http://www.ChiKindaKid.com/

Check it out and let us know what you think.

I am impressed!

Thanks for the compliments Bucky~

I was lucky enough to find a fella in Boston who offered his services free-of-charge. He's a great webdesigner and one helluva guy. If anyone is into having Flash on their pages, he has written several books on the subject and is the authority on that type of design.

If anyone is interested in his services, his website is at:

http://www.hgd.com

As a sidenote, my entire site was done in the style of my favorite artist, Keith Haring. All very primary in color and done with Haring's flair for the cartoonish side of things... It's simple ;)

Warmest Regards,

Benjamin Nicholas
