Okay, first I put this in the Lounge because I am seeking info from guys who have been to Paris, not planning to go. You might not look into the Europe thread if you were not planning to go.

Second, the thread need only be up for a few days.

Essentially I need to know a recommendation for a good hotel in the tourist area of Paris yet at the lower end of the price scale. Perhaps a small, rather unknown place.

So, if you have found a hotel that meets this criteria, can you share? Thanks.

It ain't for me, it's for my sister.

Yellowstay.com for affordable apartments

Yellowstay.com has affordable apartments all over Paris. I go to Paris every year and use them. She can stay in the Latin Quarter or the Marais or the First arrondisment.... all near the main sights. Bluboy

I go to Paris every couple of years, and have stayed at The Odeon Hotel (3 rue de L'Odeon) since the early 90's. It is a charming 30 room hotel in an 18th century building. It is very close to Odeon Metro stop, making travel around the city easy, and near the Luxembourg Gardens. I have sent many friends there over the years. http://www.odeonhotel.fr

Good location, family owned, and spotlessly clean. Ask for a room on an upper floor.

Where exactly do you consider "the tourist area of Paris" to be? It might help narrow things down.

I stayed here http://www.paris-hotel-lenox.com/ about 8 years ago and found it very nice, clean and in the heart of what I considered touristy. very close to trans/art/eateries etc.

For me, tourist area means near the major attractions, such as Notre Dame and the Louvre, or the Marais and Latin Quarter. Price is the issue. On previous trips I have always found something nice at a good price, but I am rusty on Paris.

has your sister been to Paris before? Does she know her way around? Is she an experienced international traveler? Does she speak the language at all? Will she be traveling alone?

I'm sure safety would be of great importance for both her and you and as with any large city, your location can dictate much of that. Often times a simple block, one way or the other can change your surroundings greatly. When your dealing with the low end properties scenarios, these to me would be important things to consider.

I stayed in this hotel near the Garnier opera house six weeks ago, so I can vouch for the it being well worth the price, if your sister can book a single room. There is a non-stop bus to and from the airport to the opera house that costs only nine euros (perhaps the biggest bargain in Paris money and time wise).

L'Hotel Odeon

L'Hotel Odeon. : - ) Ah, fond memories. : - )

I used to stay there during my student travel days many years ago. $2 a night including petit dejeuner with cafe au lait and crispy warm baguettes with sweet butter and fresh fruit preserves. (I see that breakfast alone is now $15.) It was highly recommended in Frommer's very first "Europe on $5 a Day." Then at night have dinner at one of the many local restaurants, a four course prix fixe meal including a demi-carafe of wine for $2. Then wander around the gardens, sit on a bench under a plane tree, and make out with a cute French boy. Ah.

LeWalt

Small boutique hotel in a lovely left bank area near the Eiffel Tower in the 7th arrondissement is a contemporary design hotel situated on Paris’ Left Bank. Just two steps from Invalides and the Champs de Mars in the 7th arrondissement - a district known for its exemplary Parisian facades and architecture - it is considered to be one of the new Parisian “hotels of charm.” Le Walt is chic and intimate with a distinctive personality.

The Metro stop is right outside the hotel, but what the heck, it's Paris, I walked everywhere.

As I read the initial thread and accompanying posts-- I began to applaud this website and this forum in particular. The originator of the thread received instant and salient responses to his query.

Lucky, we're fortunate; we are all indebted to "daddy" in having this website which has afforded us an opportunity to ask pertinent questions surrounding our interests.

In this particular case you received instant and rather solid suggestions, and I, personally, thank all respondees. If only all of our questions could be responded to in such a rapid and timely manner! -:)

Axiom, I too am grateful that Daddy has provided us this forum of which I obviously make great use. the hotel suggestions have been good. One we liked is full, but the LeWalt looks good.

Le Mon Hotel is just off the Champs Elysee and less than a 5 minute walk to the Arc De Triomphe. Small boutique hotel and has a great website. I have bought a great package deal before on LuxuryLink.com for 3 and 5 night stays here. A great value. Near shopping, good local cafes, and a short, safe walk to the metro. I hope to return for a visit this summer and stay here again.
