Has anyone else here noticed that the color red now seems to be de rigeur in attire for women who appear on TV? It seems like every female news anchor or reporter wears red 95% of the time. The same seems to go for US Senators and Congresswomen.

What gives? The phenomenon seemed to begin after Sarah Palin appeared on the scene.

Can't say about the broadcasters, but there is an agreement among the female members of congress to wear brightly colored suits during big events like the state of the union. I believe the rationale is that they will stand out and possibly bring attention to the fact that women are so underrepresented in Congress.

Not All RED

There was a recent article in the Washington Post on colors worn by women in power jobs. One of the most interesting aspects about that was Speaker Pelosi's choice of mauve/purple/lilac. It is a flattering color on her, but it also represents the merger of red and blue... interesting symbolism isn't it? Also, if you look at the colors and clothes that Laura Bush and Michele Obama have worn, there is a wide variety of color, usually chosen for particular occasions. I agree that red is often the dominant color for women in the news, or they often use red accents. However, TV cameras distort color, so if you saw them away from the TV camera the red might not be so striking. For example, men seldom wear white shirts when they are going to appear on camera, because the white does not come across in a very flattering way. Usually the white shirts that we see are actually a very light blue!! There is probably something similar for female newscasters.

I love

Nancy Pelosi's scarves. She usually wears simple and understated suits but she adds some color to her outfit with nice scarves or necklaces. I really like her scarves. My eyes are not so good but they are either Coach or Armani. It really give a nice touch to her simple colored outfits. I want to see her shoes but I can't because they never close up her shoes on TV.

Vibrant colors are "in" right now, but it's certainly not a new phenomenon.

Nancy Reagan (and Helen Thomas) wore red all the time because it was Ronnie's favorite color and it never went away.

Where's the beef?

See if you can find a video of her walking up to the Capitol last Sunday. You can see her shoes in some of the shots. They match her suit.
