Things I wish I'd said

I really wish my brain would work a little faster.

 

This afternoon, walking through the West Village I saw this very adorable looking guy with the sweetest little dog on a leash standing in front of a store.

 

As I passed by I smiled at the dog, looked up, smiled at his master who smiled back. I kept walking. Half a block later I stopped dead in my tracks.

 

I thought Damn! I should have said "That dog is almost as cute as you".

 

I turned around and they were gone.

The French, of course, have an expression for it: l'esprit d'escalier, or "staircase wit" - a clever remark you think of on the way out. I can entertain myself all day with things I wish I'd thought of while still on the scene.

 

Chances are, if you hadn't been focusing all your attention on the eye candy in front of you, the remark would have tumbled right out. So at least you've got your priorities straight!

 

And you'll know exactly what to say next time a cute dog-lover smiles at you. I'm sure it won't be long.
