If awards were based on hotness:

Actor: Clooney, with Firth a very close second (if only Chris Pine had been nominated...)

Actress: Bullock, whoever said she was a bargain basement Julia Roberts!

S Actress: Cruz, is it even close?

S Actor: Tucci, what can I say, I dig the shaved head and hairy chest

And personally, I don't get the fascination with District 9. Total snoozefest.

I'm not close to the industry, but they said back in October they were doing it to boost box office so that 10 films could advertise that they were "BEST PICTURE NOMINATED" which always stimulates box office business.

They also said it would boost ratings for the show on March 7 because more fans would tune in to support their movie.

So I'm sure it is all about the money in one form or another.

I agree that Bullock will win but only because she is a sentimental favorite. There was no performance this year better than Meryl Streep as Julia Child. And playing across from Stanley Tucci was pure joy to watch. Streep is incomparable and in my opinion the best actress of my day.

I agree Bullock will win for her body of work and finally having something to give her the award for. But I Loved Streep and her Julia was quintessential Childs

I completely disagree. The woman -- whose name escapes me -- who played "Seraphine" in the French film of the same name was easily the best performance by an actress in 2009. And she wasn't even nominated. Giving an Oscar to Sandra Bullock -- for playing Sandra Bullock -- is a complete joke.

I'm torn between Jeff Bridges and Colin Firth. Both were amazing and so different.

The Academy decided to increase the number of "Best Picture" nominees to 10 because in recent years "popular" films that actually did business, and were seen by audiences outside the major cities with "art houses" were rarely nominated. The result was that a large part of the movie going audience had not heard of, let alone seen the nominated films. The result was that the Academy Awards had come to have little meaning to the majority of the film going public.

This year marks the first year since 1943 that 10 films for "Best Picture" were nominated, and the nomination of a commercial success, but critical flop like "The Blind Side" will bring added interst from the "General Public".

These are the reasons I have heard in the press here in Los Angeles.
