It really depends on what you're looking for in a device. Its not the iPhone or even a iPhone wanna be if that helps some. It runs on the Android OS which is basically powered by everything Google.

The Nexus One runs both widgets and apps ... app world has about 40,000 titles at the moment. The screen is capacitive which is what anyone should want in a touch screen device.

Under the hood it has a snapdragon 1GHz processor making it one of the fastest smartphones on the market. Currently it only can run 3G or faster speeds on T-Mobiles network so if you are buying it to run on ATT'e riddled Edge network I would pass.

It really is an amazing device that gives you full web access and a host of features such as Google free gps, Google maps, Google voice commands, Google listen, Google Calendar and Gmail sync and Google you-get-the idea.

I am a big fan of Google however the device isn't really ground breaking. It isn't really a game changer .. what it is best is an awesome top rate smartphone with an exceptional display, speed and options.

With that said I mentioned in a thread a few days ago I started a phone blog lots of coverage of todays press event including a video of the event itself.

Taking the leap

After being with AT&T and every version of the greatest phone I have ever owned (iPhone) I will be getting the nexus one on Thursday.

I unlocked my iPhone after AT&T service failed to deliver service dropped calls slow 3g service. And use tmobile with my newly jailbroken unlocked iPhone for

unlimited service data voice & text for 80 bucks per month no contract nadda.

So my buddy from google has shipped me an unlocked nexus to NYC and I plan to give it a whirl. Fingers crossed. I just hope I can get used to it.

You shouldn't have any issues switching from the iPhone to the Nexus One. You'll find that the touch screen, speed and applications / widgets all have a different feel but are quite user friendly.

The only area you might need a little time with is the Android Keyboard. I really think Apple got the keyboard right on the iPhone. Anyway, just remember that if you don't like the keyboard you can always go to the market place, search keyboards, and change it to a different one... now I don't think your soon to be former iPhone can do that

In all seriousness if you have any questions just ask. I have decent knowledge of the Android OS.

Nexus One, Blackberry, Palm vs iPhone

Since you asked for advice:

Go to an Apple store and tell one of the associates you want a demonstration of the iPhone and the App store.

Do likewise at a TMobile, Verizon, etc for the other phone(s) you are considering.

Unless you are willing to spend ~$600 for either phone without a plan, you will be locked into a 2 year contract. It will serve you well to actually "play" with all the smart phones before making your decision.

Don't take my word that the iPhone is far superior. And don't assume the other posters are correct in their comparisons and evaluations.

Do not buy an iPhone with the intention of jail-breaking it.

Unless you live in New York or San Francisco, signal coverage is not an issue with AT&T, and AT&T is making major improvements nationwide in their cell hardware and software.

They're saying that the Nexus One will be available on Verizon too, most likely in the spring. I actually got a Droid (up till now the most powerful Android based phone) when it came out a couple of months ago on Verizon's network. I love it, couldn't be happier. And I've used plenty of smartphones. I like having the physical keyboard on the Droid, but Ryan is right, there are plenty of onscreen keyboards to try. I have 3 loaded already, including the standard that comes on the phone, and I switch between the other 2 based on what I'm doing and hardly ever use the physical keyboard. One of them takes dictation pretty well, and the other - Ryan you might want to look into this if you haven't tried it - is called Swype, it's a pretty revolutionary format.

Anyway that's the thing about Android phones, highly customizable. It might not do what you want right out of the box, but there's a way to get it to do what you want!

If anyone goes with Android, I'll be glad to answer any questions on it too if I can. I also know of some great Android forums which have helped me find the tools to do what I want my phone to do.

So, no this isn't a phone for someone who just wants to make calls - not the target market. But since my whole business is online based, it's an essential tool to help me feel a bit more free of the desktop machine. And versatile enough that I haven't even booted my netbook except to get software updates since I got the phone.

Ryan, I'm looking forward to checking out your phone blog!

Great post !!! because I live in San francisco travel often to NYC chicago over seas and many other places my experience has been AT&T works well in remote often unusual places like podunk IL. & Maui on little beach only but places such as DFW airport JFK NYC, my own home in the castro in SF and many many other places that service and undropped calls are needed

like any big city with a large population AT& T could not deliver and I have had Iphone since day one. Finally felt that the jailbreak was the only option and my Iphone works sooooooooooooooooooo

much better everywhere. and the edge network for Tmobile blows right past the 3g network for At&T go figure

I love it so much its the best phone I have ever used for me and what my needs are.

I truly hope At&T can upgrade and fix their serious network woes because I think they had (key word HAD ) a good thing going

I would go back if what they advertised were actually true but its not....

well at least not for me and most every person i know say the same thing about AT&T

Sparky a well thought out post. I haven't actually tried Swype yet but I am aware of it. On my blog (http://www.allphonenews.com) which is just a upstart btw, I have a post, with video, about a input technology where you can use your finger motion without ever even touching the screen

Very nice blog Ryan! And I checked out that video. Cool. I'm all for the idea of gesture controls being executed right in mid air. They're working on that for TVs too (that's televisions, not transvestites - they already control all sorts of things in mid air). Anyone remember "Earth: Final Conflict" ? Maybe before too long we'll go around waving our hands at all our appliances and vehicles to get them to do stuff. Then the thought controlled versions will come out the month after we get locked into 2 year contracts on the stuff we wave at, lol.

Personally I'm waiting for the google chip implant. I'll be first in line for a direct link to the net. Of course if I hit an area with no cell service my eyes would probably cross. Oh, they do that already.
