That's another important point about knowing your market. Thanks for bringing it up!

The DC economy is based on two activities: politics/diplomacy and tourism. (Well ... we won't talk about the crack dealers... :+)

Both are very transient and the crowd that was in town last week won't be the same as the crowd that's in town next week.

Places like SD have their share of tourists, but there are other things driving the economy of the region so the population is probably a *little* more stable. It has to effect how you market your services.

RE: how to work without AOL

When I set it up for a friend, their trial was for 3 months.

But they have different policies for different regions, so even there your mileage may vary. They raised their rates for NYC, for example, but didn't apply the rate increase to Chicago. They have a LOT of advertisers in NYC and precious few in Chicago.

Of course, you forward those people who inquire about your travel plans a link to this site, yes? ;-)

>(Well ... we won't talk

the success rate for crack dealers has fallen off enormously since marion barry was PAID OFF not to run for mayor again. anthony williams has done wonders for the bow tie & pocket protector markets though.

my favorite mayoral quote:

-marion barry after getting busted smoking crack in a hotel room with a skanky female prostitute from 13th street-

"g_ddamned bitch set me up!"

mind you, he then spent time in jail (when we had the oh-so memorable tenure of ms. sharon pratt kelly--nobody remembers anything about her, but some of the street cleaning signs still have her name on them). after his release, he ran for mayor again, AND WAS PROMPTLY RE-ELECTED BY THESE IDIOTS! of course, congress wised up, set-up the financial advisory committee, removed home rule, and stripped the mayor of power.

ROFL!

Oh, how well I remember that.

I'd lived in the DC area for 10 years when Sharon Pratt Dixon was elected, and I left the area shortly thereafter.

It COMPLETELY amazed me that Marion Barry got re-elected every time. Every week there was a new scandal in the paper, from nepotism to sex abuse. He made Chicago politics look CLEAN!

When I heard, later, that Barry had been re-elected after getting out of jail (and didn't he become a Muslim?), I just couldn't believe it.

The DC-local free weekly used to refer to him as MayorForLifeMarionBarry. One word. I can't for the life of me remember the name of that rag, but it was fun to read.

Oh, the memories!

more capital trivia

you may have noticed that deej & i have referred to the same woman as sharon pratt dixon & sharon pratt kelly, respectively. can we both be right? yes.

when she was elected mayor, sharon used the last name of her ex-husband, arrington dixon. she had a disastrous first year in office. at the end of that year, she married some man from new york named kelly, and took on his last name.

the mayorforlife was offered a very cushy position by a local consortium of universities if he would not stand for re-election. georgetown, american, and GW (among others) were having trouble attracting students because of the mayor's misdeeds.

you should have seen the HUGE (and publicly funded) gala tribute/goodbye to barry they held here. anthony williams is undoubtedly a geek, but he's such a breath of fresh air compared to what we had before--even if he is a big tree-hugging liberal.

my favorite local politico:

carol schwartz. you've got to see her to believe her. she's the token woman republican on the city council. a bit left of my own views, but still, this is DC!

i don't care for david catania. he's the queer republican on the city council. he needs to learn about personal space issues at JRs! i'm sorry, but if you're not feeding me, putting a roof over my head, and giving me keys to the mercedes, i DO NOT want to feel your hoochiwhatzit pressed up against my backside at a bar!

let us know if anything we said helps, michael.

it was, after all, amazingly uncharacteristic of me to be helpful like that. ;-)

As much as I hate recommending anything analog (rather than digital) it seems as tho a large percentage of the regular advertisers in the local gay rag here in SF seem to do with with only print advertisements. (I'm amazed at how many escorts continue to advertise for weeks, months, years without a review here, which tells me their clientele are cyber-unsophisticated, beit AOL, M4M, Escorts4U or whateever.)

I assume you're in San Diego from your handle; I haven't seen the gay press there for a while, but I'd find it hard to believe that they don't have an "escort" section.

Seems, tho, as if a series of truly GLOWING reviews here would go a long ways toward establishing an escort's career. I don't know from your handle what your clients have said about you, so I don't know how that may or may not impact your ability to make a living only off this site.

As for me I NEVER use AOL as a means for finding escorts that I'm interested in.

awwww the powers of AOL....I personally hate AOL with a great passion. I have been banned, harrased, terminated, anything you can think of AOL has done it to me. ( thank god I have many friends to sign up accounts for me) I do nothing wrong on AOL....I have no dirty words in my profile..I never send out xrated pics and I dont even chat in chat rooms. But due to jealous idiots they report me for anything. What I don't understand is AOL double standards. Like the aol memeber with the screename "Escortboi4u2do" His profile talks about his endowment...it talks about what he likes sexually and AOL has never shuts him down. I have even reported him due to the fact that AOL made me take the word " escort" out of my screen name due to AOL being a family oriented company (bullshit)My old screen name was OSUescortboys, but TOS told me that was an unexceptable screen name for a family oriented business. So how do they figure that Escortboi4u2do is okay? I just used the word escort...I wasn't saying" hey come do me" along with it. So I guess what Im getting to is that AOL sucks and there is nothing anyone can do about a power giant, MONEY oriented company like AOL. I do get lots of business from AOL so unfortunaly I will have to keep fighting the battle. Grin and bear it! I really apprecaite this service here with HooBoy it has helped with business and I dont have any of the AOL DRAMA! :-)

Why did you report him?

If you would have read what I typed more clearly...you would see that I was told by an AOL TOS memeber that AOL "does not allow ANY user to use the word -escort-" in their screename. So I was merely pointing out to AOL that their are several....100's....1000's of screenames with the word -escort- in them. Mine was just OSUescortboys, which I found less offensive then Escortboi4u2do. Hello, I own an escort agency, I don't mind the word escort in a screename at all....I do mind AOL's makeshift rules though.

Hmmm—let me get this str8—you don’t even know "Escortboi4u2do", BUT YOU REPORTED HIM WHY????]

>HooBoy it has helped with business and I dont have any of

Drama—like reporting someone you don’t know, in a different city, who isn’t hurting you, because AOL messed with you? Or is that the gay variation of the golden rule—Do on to your fellow fag as a biggoted str8 (maybe) Corporation has done on to you?

Could you please list all of your screen names in reply to this so that I can be sure never to hire you?

Michael,

Don't really know the answer to your question..but I do know AOL sucks. I NEVER use aol as an isp. They are a corporate conglomerate "least common denominator" organization. What can you expect from them? I know that the downside is that, by definition, they are the most widely used isp....no one ever went broke underestimateing ther taste of the American public.By your posts, I feel you are a great guy and I suspect you are an awesome escort.. just wish I was on the west coast( only for escort purposes).I think that unless you are in a huge market area..you have to rely on more than just m4m for your business. But m4m helps,I'm sure.

Well, hello to you, too. I took your advice and re-read your other post "more clearly." Other than causing problems for the guy you reported to AOL, what did your action accomplish? Do you really think reporting someone to AOL is the same as "merely pointing out" something that I'm sure they are already well aware of?
