Any Apple users here happen to know if my 8gb Ipod touch should only have a 7gb capacity? It shows a few mb being used already and I am guessing that is normal but to lose an entire GB seems pretty extreme.

unfortunately on the smaller units more memory is used for "other stuff" which I think is bad planning on their part. My 32GB iPhone actually only has 29GB of space on it. So I think they need to re-think how they market their unit sizes.

it doesn't seem correct.

i by a 8gb player

i get a capacity of 7gb

180 mb being used out of the box leaves me with 6.20gb to use

wtf apple?

it would be like buying a computer with a 240gb hard drive yet it only is a 220gb hard drive instead.

its not like it shows me a capacity of 8gb it shows 7gb.... i need to call apple in the morning.

aside from this so far i am liking the ipod touch even though i didn't think i would care for it ... had planned to return it but now i probably will keep it once i get the capacity sorted out.

this is an old game played my hard drive manufacturers. "500MB" from them is actually 500 million bits, not 500 megabytes. that is, 500,000,000 (476.8 megabytes).

on flash based devices like the non-disk ipods, i think the numbers are actually true. but like any computer, there is a filesystem which has its own overhead (directory listing, access times, etc) as well as overhead for any file. filesystems are block based, so there is also a rounding effect which accounts for some extra space used. i guess my point here is, there are real technical reasons behind the discrepancies. :)

I finally had a chance to speak with Apple. And it appears its the os and preloaded apps using the missing 1gb. That is a bit misleading to call it a 8gb player or at the very least it should be clarified that its 8gb but only 7gb free space.

I do really like it though and most likely will be upgrading to the larger unit since I can still exchange this one.

Yes! Live and learn! Always buy larger than what you need as you never get what is advertised. I recently purchased a 640 GB portable external hard drive... the reason being that while I "technically" needed the 500 GB version, that configuration would not have given me the full 500... This way I got my 500 GB with some to spare.
