I had the pleasure of seeing the new Theresa Redbeck play, The Undertsudy, Saturday evening.

A 90 minute, no intermission, fast paced, witty, clever and well-acted comedy about the rehersal of an understudy to the understudy in a Broadway play. Three characters, Justin Kirk (from Weeds), the uber-talented Julie White, and making his Broadway debut and new to the stage, hunk-a-licious heartthrob Mark Paul Gosslear (former twink idol from Saved By the Bell, and more recently NYPD Blue and now Raising The Bar).

Turns out Mr. Gosslear is now only very goodlooking but is very darn good in his role in this play. Bravo! Alas, he did not disrobe for the role! Perhaps next time?

Theater

Good to hear, Ed. I have tickets to see the show in November.

Do you have any idea about The Starry Messenger? I'm thinking of taking a chance on that, but with such a small theater I need to act today.

Depends, this is a new play and a premiere work, so we have no other productions to compare it to. Also, it stars Matthew Broderick who hasn't been very successful in his recent Broadway shows and needs to redeem himself in the eyes of the NY theater critics.

You may want to put this on your "b" list of shows to see...

Mark has certainly had enough acting experience. It seems likely that he will be more successful than many child stars in transitioning to adult stardom. For one thing, he no long looks like a teen ager. Many teen age male stars have a problem making the transition, because they still are too good looking. So, guys like Paul Walker have too wear two days worth of beard so he won't look as cute as he actually is. Joey Lawrence has not succeeded and probably will not. Rob Lowe seems to be getting along without looking scruffy. Brad Pitt is now scruffy more often than not. David Chokachi is allway scruffy and it is not working. He should have stayed beautiful.

I really think they and other intentionally look scruffy so they will seem older and more serious.
