Mine's broken. Anybody know of a MP3 Player that allows you to adjust/create playlists on the fly rather than just on the computer (i.e. not the iPod)? Thanks.

I'm actually looking forward to responses. I've sorta lost track of the MP3 player market so I don't know what's out there either. My Lyra has been serving me well for a couple of years but I'm getting tired of carrying around all the memory cards to suit various moods.

Although I'd bet the nature of the beast will rely on the "brains" being in the computer, not in the player. Moving the smarts into the player will make it heavier (and more expensive).

Not sure if it allows for editing/creating playlist on the unit itself, but the Creative Jukebox, would be my choice... up to 20G of space... comprehensive album/songtitle listings, and the size of a standard cd walkman. A bit on the pricey side..about 400, but your entire music collection(at least most peoples...mine I would need about 5 or 6 of em) in the palm of your hand.

I've had mine for nearly 6 months and I'm very happy with it. Once you've had a session ripping CD tracks onto the Jukebox you can forget your computer. Playlists are easily compiled and edited on the unit, something I often do when waiting for (and on) the train. It comes with a spare set of batteries, easy to use software and has been very reliable. It stores the track title, artist, album and genre for each track, rather than just a meaningless number. I'm living away from home at the moment and it has enabled me to leave all of my CDs behind and just carry the Jukebox.

It's also useful for "borrowing" music from those who are well endowed in that area :)

Thanks everyone. I'm very conflicted. On the one hand the Creative is nice because it allows you to edit playlists on the go which is very important to me. But it is very bulky. I never carried DiscMen around because of their size.

The Ipod is very portable, perfectly compatible with my Titanium G4 (plus they match, so that's Gay), and it uses firewire, so it's faster than USB each time I add ten more songs from a ripped CD it will take 10 seconds rather than 7 minutes. The problem is that the iPod doesn't allow you to build and modify playlists on the go, and so the time a firewire saves me, is more than wasted putting the playlist together. Darn. I'll have to make up my mind.

On Ebay they are both reasonably priced.

Thanks again everyone.

p.s. The sonicBlue, according to the reviews, is much bulkier than it looks.

Rio Riot

Rod:

The Riot is not so much bulky as it is oddly shaped. I have the Intel Concert [ http://www.intel.com/home/audio/pocketconcert/requirements.htm ] and I love it ... it's no larger than a deck of cards and has a great cradle that allows for quick updates and changes to the playlist. Using the Windows Media format I am able to load about 60 songs at a time. A guy at my gym has the Treo and loves it -- but I don't know about the playlist functionality [ http://www.edigital-store.com ].

... Treo: More Information ...
