I have just found out that my partner has a booking in Phoenix June 21-25 and I have to go with. I was looking through my usual sources and the rental car rates there are OUTRAGEOUS. My question is...will a lack of wheels hurt my business there? If a car is necessary I will probably just drive and stop at a friends house in West TX on the way. Any Phoenix advice would be greatly appreciated...thanks! :)

Well I don't live in Phoenix but I do have a good friend that does and visit her quite often. All I can say is that the city and surrounding areas are pretty spread out...think LA but take it down a couple of notches. There's Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Glendale and so on, if I was in your shoes I'd try to get my hands on a vehicle. ;)

Hi Jason.. I do live in Phoenix and you definitely need a car.. The city is pretty spread out.. and our mass transit system sucks. We dont even have a centralized gay ghetto like WeHo or Hillcrest, or Oaklawn.. Everything requires transportation. Let me know if you have any other questions about Phoenix. Would be glad to give you any advice/share my knowledge of Phoenix..

If you decide to get a car, maybe try Hotwire.

It looks like they're $223.80 with tax for an

economy and something around $252 for a

full-size for your dates with unlimited mileage

if you return 6/25 at the same time you pick

up. Returning 6/26 for some reason is a bit

more expensive, per day.

Negatives are you have to prepay, don't get

miles, can't get a refund, and you also can't

upgrade or make changes when you arrive,

you have to stand in line at the counter

and you don't get the name of the rental

car company until after you buy online,

but whateva.

I agree with everyone else that it would be

hard to get around Phoenix without a car.

Whatever you decide, good luck and enjoy

your trip!

If you are willing to take a chance on a Hotwire or Priceline Car, sometimes you can get a free upgrade. Occasionally, and I haven't done this on purpose, but I've reserved an economy size car and arrived on a very late plane. I then get to the rental agency--they are out of the economy cars--I don't think they usually carry many because most people like larger cars--and they upgrade me for free. Of course once they gave me a frickin van when I hate driving big things--but ya plays the game and then ya takes your chances.

rental cars

Phoenix requires a car, definitely. Your best bet is to rent outside of the airport. Cars are indeed outrageous and the taxes for renting there are often 3-4 times the daily rate of rental. If you are a Hertz member, they frequently give free upgrades most of the time.

Priceline works well

I haven't leased a car here in a year or so, but there are some cut-rate places at the Airport center that were renting for $7-10/day, and I have always had great luck with Priceline (bidding). You will definitely need a car with good A/C in June in Phoenix, plus you'll be able to get great rates on hotels here--The Summer plus the economy means that you can pretty much get luxury for a lot less. I'm surprised cars are that pricey, since Summer is our Dead Zone, tourism-wise. If you opt to go with a name brand and need a coupon code, let me know. Enjoy your stay! I know Phoenix will!

I can't imagine trying to travel by public transportation (or on foot) in all that heat. Even if the buses are air-conditioned, they still won't be as comfortable as a new car where you can have it as chilly as you want. After all, it's only money......

You know that "Phoenix will" what? Inquiring minds want to know.

I think he was trying to infer that Phoenix will enjoy my visit, which is what I hope for any place that I visit! ;-)

Whoops,my mistake. I have new glasses, and I didn't initially see the exclamation point after the word "will". It blended into the "L's". I thought he had started to say something and had left the thought incomplete.

As for your "hope"--I am sure you do bring "joy" to the places you visit. I would love for you to bring joy to me, but unfortunately for me--you don't bottom.

Sigh

Right you are, Jason!

I did mean to predict that Phoenix's sun-baked denizens will definitely enjoy meeting you, or enjoy seeing you again if you've already met. I hope you have a great time!
