When I was in high school, one of the worse scandals I could imagine was being caught by the police in a gay bar sting. We frequently saw the grainy stills of men being led out of gay bars, their hands trying to cover their faces. Now, this weekend in Palm Springs, young gays are being welcomed throughout the city for the annual White Party in the town's Convention Center. Everywhere you see shirtless young guys holding hands, laughing down the street. The police don't care, and, it seems, no one else does either. And this follows last weekend's lesbian golf tournament.

In the NY Times today, Adam Lambert is on the cover of the Styles section in an article discussing his purported gayness and whether that can hinder or help him win American Idol. The Times wedding pages now show happy gay couples, and even Iowa has shown the nation the way of the future.

This can be a bit overwhelming for someone who grew up being told how sinful it was to be gay. Here on this very website, young men who grow up taking the new liberties for gays for granted post alongside men who struggled at least for a time to keep their sexuality a secret.

But I have one thing in common with the young guys attending last night's White Party. We were all up at 5 a.m., blurry eyed. The difference for me was that instead of dancing the night away, I had fallen asleep in my chair at 8 p.m. and was just waking up for the day at 5 a.m., while these kids are going to have to sleep it off before tonight's continuing festivities.

The Times also has an article on former views of homosexuality in New York, and reminds us that the Stonewall Anniversary is upcoming.

(Since I am a registered Times viewer, the article shows up with no problem, but if you are not registered, today would be a good day to do so. Why miss out on all the free stuff the Times provides online?)

Lucky, every so often on this board, someone knocks out a perfect gem of a post.

Thank you.

Umm, well, maybe because the Grey Lady loses more credibility in a week than she picks up new subscribers (even free) in a year?

Times Today

One can debate the Grey Lady's merits all day long, but if she left town, it would be a great loss. Today she brought us this article, a story on the Iowa case, gay wedding announcements, and the Adam Lambert profile, not to mention pages and pages of other good stuff not to be found in any newspaper in the country. But if you want to debate it, please start another thread! thanks.

I am glad that this post made some folks happy. Thanks for saying so, publicly and privately.
