I've been working out lately and lost about 15 pounds over last 6 months but there are some areas that just don't seem to get smaller.

I'm thinking about liposuction but kind of whimpy when it comes to pain. Anyone had any experience? Also, worried about the scars showing. Would appreciate any experiences.

Last year, I decided to have a neck lift (where they suture the loose neck muscle tight and lipo excess fat around it). This required general anasthesia, so I decided to have lipo around my stomach. The neck surgery wasn't particularly painful, but the lipo around the stomach and butt was a son of a bitch. A small area wouldn't be too bad, but the large area was extremely painful for about a week (during which time I wore a girdle and iced constantly) and moderately painful for another 3 weeks (during which time I wore the girdle 75% of the time). The healing process went well. All the scars (even the significant one under my chin) have healed so that they are almost undetectable. With respect to the lipo, the surgeon made 5 holes (literally small holes to insert the suction device) -- in the belly button, which I never could see; 2 in the front just above my groin; and 2 in the lower portion of the back. These 5 provided access to the entire area. As I said, they are now almost undetectable; however, I have good skin tone and heal well. The skin also healed smoothly and naturally -- thanks to a great amount of self massage. I'm not sure I would have had it done if I hadn't already decided to undergo surgery (and anasthesia) for the neck surgery. However, I'm happy that I had it done.

Thanks. I'm glad it worked out well. Approximately, what was the cost?

Liposuction is not without risks; a fellow who worked at one of the san francisco gyms at the desk and sometimes as a personal trainer, who was very fit and healthy and in his late 20's but had a little bit of extra insulation in his own eyes that he wanted rid of, underwent lipo and died within 48 hours of infection. This was about 2 years ago, I think.

SF

Yes, it was more like 1997 or 1998, there was a 48 Hour or some other network news segment on it and OUT magazine also published an extensive article about it during that same time period. Unfortunately, even though I met the gentlemen several times when I lived in SF, I cannot now remember his name.

ANY surgical procedure is not without risk. There are potential some additional, non-surgical techniques you can try, which you should look into by speaking to a nutritionist, a good, certified, educated (Masters in Sports Physiology) personal trainer -- perferably one who is both experienced in nutrition, and spend the money on a few sessions with him or her to review your diet, your current exercise regimen and other lifestyle factors and see if there are other things you may try. It is also possible you may never have washboard abs or even a flat tummy due to genetics, age or any other number of factors. This is the point to consider the risks and what you desire before you proceed to surgery.

A year or so ago, Genre did an excellent article on the risks and benefits of plastic surgery and how to select a good doctor. Make sure you ask plenty of questions and best of luck with your goals!
