Torpedo's in Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale has a new stripper bar, Torpedo's, and it has the potential to be the best. It is located at 2829 W. Broward, which is a few blocks west of Johnny's and west of I 95 on the north side of the street and on a corner. It has a large, lighted parking lot in back and a doorman who watches over the cars.

When you enter from the back, you first come into a large, very pleasant room with a fine stage against the back wall, a dance floor in front of the stage, and about 20 armchairs arranged in conversational groups around the dance floor. Off to one side are some large sofas against the wall.

Then there is a raised platform in the center of the room, between this area and the bar, where a second dancer performs. Beyond it, towards the front, is the four sided bar with lots of space around it. James, the bartender, is very cute and very nice. Behind the bar to the side is a room with four curtained booths, about 6 foot square each and containing a leather sofa, chair, and table apiece. For $20 you can go into one of the cubicles with a dancer and pull the curtain shut. The $20 will get you a BLD (Basic Lap Dance) for two or three songs. Beyond that you negotiate with the dancer. They are totally private, and no one looks in. There is also a small separate room with pool table behind the dj.

There is no cover charge. There were 10 dancers on Wednesday night, and all of them nice. The doorman/manager said they want to create a different ambience from the other bars = they don't want dancers pressuring customers for tips. So all night long, pleasant dancers came around and chatted and allowed petting, were happy with tips, would certainly accompany you to a back room, but no one pressured and no one was sullen. If they can maintain this, it will be a significant step.

Several of the dancers have moved over from the Boardwalk, i.e. Jacob, Robby, Junior and one other last night. A very cute, sweet twink named Adam was dancing for his third night. This was twink Robert's first night; but you would not describe the bar as primarily a twink bar. No big musclemen at all, but mostly young guys in their early 20s in good shape, some a bit worked on.

Currently the dancers don't start until 10:00, but that was described as a practicality not a policy. For now, as a clientele is being developed, most customers arrive after 10 p.m. Having a lot of dancers before then means they sit around talking to each other. As more people start to come, and especially if people start coming earlier, they said they would extend the hours of the dancers. They are open until 4:00 a.m. The dancers do not have to pay to dance here, and so the feeling is different.

The atmosphere is very nice, relaxed, spacious, and the dancers make good eye candy whether on stage or circulating, and the possibilities for fun in back are significant. It's a great addition to the Fort Lauderdale gay scene. Its proximity to I 95 means it is easily and quickly accessible from many areas.

Thanks for the report, Karl. I had heard "through the grapevine" that his club was good from both the dancer and customer perspective, and wanted to hear from someone who actually attended.

Hope it works out. It sounds like the setup makes it closest to a MOntreal strip bar of all the ones that currently exist in FLL. If they have high quality dancers, it will be a winner.

Torpedo Bar update

The spacious, completely private roomettes have been closed to lap dancing (and other activities – see below). Stops have been put on the rods so that the curtains can’t close all the way. Although I was told that they were now available only as open roomettes for “rental” by groups of customers who buy a bottle at the bar and want to hang out together, at least one dancer convinced the bartender to allow a lap dance there (with the curtain partially open). (One of the security people ascribed the changed roomette policy to 2 factors. First, pressure from the police, who viewed the closed room lap dances as essentially prostitution. More importantly, management had found groups of customers ensconced in the roomettes doing things that were sure to get the club in trouble.)

Lap dances are now done in a larger area to the side of the back stage which is curtained off from the rest of the bar and furnished with about 6-8 large comfortable couches. It is reminiscent of the lap dance room at Boardwalk, but the couches are much father apart, and no outsider monitors what goes on. (At Boardwalk the DJ is in the lap dance room facing the couches.) A lap dancer and his client might be visible to other dancers and their clients (who are usually too preoccupied to pay much attention).
