Here is an article about the recent closing of La Cage, reproduced here without permission from the September 19, 2003 issue of the Washington Blade newspaper.

La Cage strip club closes its doors

La Cage Aux Follies, a gay bar and nightclub that has offered nude male dancing for more than 20 years, closed its doors on Tuesday without prior notice to its customers and employees. Bob Siegel, the owner of the building at 18 0 Street, SE, said he first learned about the closing when he observed workers loading the bar’s furnishings and supplies onto a truck. Matthew Deak, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., businessman who owned the bar, could not be reached by press time. Siegel said he gave his approval to Deak’s plan earlier this year to sell the business to a Philadelphia businessman after Deak corrected several fire code violations for which Siegel said Deak was responsible. “I don’t know why the sale fell through,” Siegel said. However, he speculated that a tax liability stemming from the party that owned the business before Deak may have played a role in the abandoned sale. One source knowledgeable with La Cage said the IRS recently froze the bar’s bank account after the bar failed to arrange for payment of back taxes. Fred Moosally, general counsel for the D.C. Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, which regulates bars and nightclubs, said there was no regulatory action pending against La Cage for liquor law violations. The ABC Board had cited La Cage in the past for alleged illegal “touching” between its nude dancers and customers, and imposed a fine for the alleged violation.

RE: open: Heat

I just visited Heat this past Saturday. It has definitely changed in a good way since it first opened. It looks like they put more money into the operation. The place was crowded; there was definitely MANY more dancers (twink lovers would be happy); there's a pool table, there's a guy in the bathroom with a tuxedo who watches your hands and stuff; and now theres even a restaurant. In terms of the champagne room I heard that their logo is now "What happens in the champagne room stays in the champagne room".:+
