I will be in New Orelans in September and I was hoping for an update on the corner pocket as well as any other venues that have male dancers?

My main questions regarding the corner pocket:

1. How safe is the location? Ok to walk from Bourbon Street?

2. Do they have male dancers every night? Their web site doesn't

seem like it is updated frequently.

3. Anybody have much luck with taking dancers off premises?

4. Generally what type of crowd is it? screaming females? hustlers?

thanks in advance

Bourbon Pub and Oz also have dancers but not in the volume or type as the Pocket.

YUP, the French Quarter is pretty safe to wander around. Just keep your wits about you like any other place.

I think so, they just have more on weekends.

Most of the dancers are very much interested in being taken off site

Older daddy types seeking twinks mostly.

I was there in January for a few days. I had no problem walking through the area at night. It's not far off Bourbon and a couple of other gay bars are on the way. They're worth checking out. I was propositioned in one of them.

The dancers when I was there were far from the good-looking Montreal dancers. Very rough trade, and I wouldn't describe any of the dancers except for one as being a cute twink. Only a couple were ones that I would have left with. But to each his own. I'm sure the turnover is great enough that most of the ones there in January will have been replaced.

As mentioned, the clients were older. I thought it was a pretty friendly place. It is fairly small and a lot worse for wear like most of the French Quarter. I don't regret the time spent there even if I never picked anyone up.

I would add that other than on Bourbon Street I was very apprehensive, cautious and alert but had no bad experiences walking all over the downtown area. Maybe I was lucky and stupid or maybe the intense police presence in the downtown area discourages those who would prey on tourists.

Beignets rock. Eat them while they're still hot. There's a place on Bourbon that sells them, but you have to go to Cafe du Monde near the river for the experience. There is also a Cafe du Monde at Riverwalk that sells beignets. What can I say. I'm now at that age that more of my fantasies involve good food than bad boys.

I will be visiting the French Quarter in September, the weekend after Southern Decadence. My concern is with the lack of possible action after that event. In many gayborhoods, the gay bars and clubs tend to be dead after a big holiday weekend. Will this be the case in the gay French Quarter?

Does any one know who are the current regular dancers at the Corner Pocket? The website lists five featured dancers. Are these five guys still dancing every night?

Does any one have any recommendations on escorts or masseurs?

I was in New Orleans a month before Katrina and again last month. If you are a business traveller or tourist and limit yourself to the French Quarter, CBD, and Warehouse District, you would think nothing had happened. The French Quarter and Convention Center are critical to the city's financial base, so those areas are a priority and look fine. Still, even if you are there for just a couple of days, you will feel the difference.

What my cabbie told me is the the real problem is that about half the population and the places they used to live are just gone. Quality service personnel are at a premium and the population of cute dancing boys is now pretty limited. I think many of the dancers come in from Texas or Florida for short term visits and share hotel rooms. Business is down and is slowly rebuilding. Of course, I was there in summer when it's hot and humind as hell - not New Orleans prime time. You can be sure it will be hopping for Southern Decadence, Mardi Gras, and whatever other parties and festivals they can dream up to get people to visit. For a bit, it will seem like the old days, but then, it will revert to a pretty slow pace, perking up a bit on the weekends.

As other posters said, you need to keep your wits about you, but the Quarter is pretty safe with a strong police presence. Your greatest risk is probably having some tourist vomit a hurricane on you.

The Corner Pocket has guys dancing on the bar every night starting at 9 PM. As before, with the exception of perhaps one guy, it is a pretty underwhelming group. I felt like taking a few, not to take them back to my hotel, but to buy them a sandwich. Skinny boys, with tatoos, chain-smoking don't do it for me. On the plus side, the place has no problem with some pretty naughty behavior. I think they have an amateur strip contest on Friday or Saturday night.

The real shocker for me was the Bourbon Street Pub and Oz, which are directly across the street from each other on Bourbon at St. Anne. These places used to be jammed on the weekends and plenty busy on weekdays. In fact, I think one of them didn't close on the weekend. OZ was doing ok during the weekend and had some nice looking muscle on the bar (alas, almost assuredly straight giving all the attention to the women present). When I went past the following Monday and Tuesday, OZ was closed! That is a sign of the economic times. You can bet your bottom dollar, which is what they're after, that if they could get a crowd in there, the doors would be open and the boys would be up there on that bar. Bourbon Street Pub wasn't closed, but was pretty subdued with no dancers in sight after the weekend.

If you want to stop by a nice relatively quiet gay bar, I recommend Good Friends Bar on Dauphine Street, just one block up St. Anne from Bourbon Street. I think it is more of a neighborhood place for the local gay community. Mike was my bartender, a nice and very cute guy who proved he has a great signing voice on Karaoke night. Naturally, Good Friends will get much friskier for Mardi Gras and Southern Decadence and, like every othe gay watering hole on earth, runs lots of special events (underwear parties, etc.)

Have fun.
