I can hardly believe a story on CNN today - but I'm sure it's accurate - that tells of Att. Gen Ashcroft spending $8000 for dark blue curtains to cover 2 statues in the Robert Kennedy Justice Bldg.

One is of a female who has one breast exposed and the other is of a male - not sure how exposed he is.

I believe these statues had been in place for 70 years. This has to be the sickest BS to come out of Washington in years. I always thought Ashcroft was a scarey man and now it has been confirmed.

GOD HELP AMERICA and all who dwell therein.

Not sure about the cost though the story is true. Apparently he has a problem standing in front of the statue of the woman with her breast exposed.

He is more repressed than the talabon :-(

Cheers! Ritchie

reality check re. the Vatican

Monsignor Ashcroft brings to mind several questions I have pondered over my lifetime:

Many posters, including jizz-de-italian-pepperoni, can attest to the length and girth of many Italian penises (#@@#!$@!@!!!).

1) So, before they started covering them up with fig leaves, why do Renaissance images of men show such small penises? Maybe Michelangelo's David is so monumental that any penis would appear dimunitive.

2) Had Renaissance artists explored the use of fluffers?

Any input from art history or Italian buffs would be appreciated.

Couldn't he have gone to K-Mart :9 and done the same job with nice Martha Stewart sheets for a LOT less than $8K???????? }>

I find the action repulsive, of course. For $8K they could have moved the statues to the Smithsonian or something. Using public funds to cover up valuable art is a travesty.

It's classic Washington mentality. (And before anyone takes me to task, I lived and worked there for 10 years. The key word is *worked*. Few do.) They always spend a whole lot of money solving the wrong problem.

The real problem here was having art in the wrong place. Instead of moving it, they spent way too much money to cover it up. It's still art in the wrong place, and now nobody can enjoy the art.

GOOD problem solving skills!

Disgusting, right wing conservative Christian move, Johnnyboy. I mean the freaking statues have been in place for something like 70 years. He could have moved the podium he speaks from for a buck ninety-five! What an ass.

the art could have stayed and ashcroft been removed.

Touche, and a good point. As has been said the podium could have been repositioned. But I'm willing to bet it never occurred to any of the rocket scientists involved.

They were give the problem as covering the statues, not as having art in the wrong place.

I feel like quoting the Harold Hill character from "The Music Man": THINK, MEN, THINK! :p

From an article in the Washington Times:

According to ABC News, the "strongly religious" Mr. Ashcroft

was "fed up," and could not abide waggish photographs angled to

include his face and the statue's right breast - a fate that had

befallen former Attorney General Edwin Meese the day he released

the final findings of a pornography commission back in 1986.

"No one in the Great Hall that day could ever forget the

spectacle of the still photographers writhing on the floor,

flat on their backs, in order to grab the shot of Meese holding

up the porn report," noted ABC at its news Web site yesterday.

Nothing surprises me when it comes to our government! For the life of me I simply DON'T understand why things NEVER change in Washington. I wonder will the day come when we have someone in Washington that ACTUALLY tries to SAVE taxpayers money. x(

I agree, it is a deplorable waste of taxpayers money, but what is worse is the scarey mind that dwells within Asscroft. What will he try to censor next. God help our freedoms if he ever turns his attention to the internet!
