Any Info on NeYC Bar Red?

Over in the Deli, there is mention of a new bar in NYC, 53rd St (WEST 53, I hope!) called Red. Does anyone know it? Where exactly on 53rd St? Dancers all the time, just weekends, what? Are the dancers available to talk with customers?

 

I greatly miss the old Cats bar, and Stella's is a far second. I'd love info on this new place.

I was there last Thursday. A small, upstairs of a townhouse kind of place -- bar in the middle, dance floor to the back, hallway with restrooms leading to a smaller room in the front with soft padded stage thingy and some chairs. Coat check is $2 ($1 at Town House), a Dewars and water was $7. The waiter told me in no uncertain terms ("In case you're from out of town") that the gratuity is not included in the drink and held out his hand. I smiled and thanked him and gave him nothing for his attitude. The cutest guy there was the coat check lad, who had just had his lower back tattooed with a design of his own and was showing it off to anyone who asked.

 

Dancers came on at 10:30 or so. Bump and grind in a swimsuit or thong on a little stagelet with lights, then a tour round the room. There were two dancers while I was there, but I didn't stay long -- Jared -- tall beefy muscle guy, very sweet, and a little later Peter (?) a Polish guys with a perfect body. Jared was very friendly, allowed extensive groping as long a a bill was stuffed in from time to time. I liked him a lot. Peter seemed more aloof, and had quite a modest form-fitting swim suit thing on.

 

The news is that Red will apparently go 7 nights a week starting in February.

what nights are they open now? thursdays only? weekends as well?

I don't have the exact address, but Red is on East 53rd St. between 2nd and 1st Ave., closer to the 2nd Ave. end, on the north side of the street. You go into a door leading to a hall and then stairs. There is a small (4" square?) illuminated sign by the door which says Red.

 

Right now it is only open on Thursdays, but the people working there say that it will start operating every night beginning in February -- not sure exactly when in February. There is, I believe, a lesbian bar called Julie's which is there the rest of the time.

 

If it is Red's ambition to rival the late lamented Rounds, it has a way to go. I saw nothing in the clientele even remotely interesting in the escort mode. Maybe I left too early. I would say that I was not thrilled with the place, and probably won't go back for a while.
