>Odd, I've never thought of this as a gay-themed movie... Aguirre is certainly one of Mr. Kinski's great performances... I'll never forget that last shot with all of the monkeys on the raft.<

Exactly. The apex of the gay subtext. A brilliant scene, summarizing in all it's hopeless, manic desperation, the complete gay experience. Herzog is a fairy God.

>gangster brother superstars of the swinging sixties, Ronnie

>and Reggie Kray...It's violent as hell, and the brothers' sexuality is not entirely the focus of the film,<

That is a fine film, and I agree that the brothers sexuality took a back seat to the statement made about all the fatherless mama's boys that filled London's gutters for years after the war. The Krays oedipal obsession with their weepy widowed mum and sad eyed old aunties was creepy and enlightening. The way the film dealt with Ronnies (the really insane and violent one) homosexuality also surprised me. I never knew. At times while viewing, I felt like the film was inspired in part by an old Monty Python sketch. Two crazy violent mobster spoofs, one of whom was dating a transvestite and the other being chased by a giant hedge-hog named Spiney Norman. Any Python fans remember that skit?

>Amazon.Com. They usually beat TLA's prices by quite a bit.

A word to the wise...Amazon.Com has changed it's privacy policy and now sells its information to other companies. If you have reason to maintain a low profile, Amazon is not the place to buy.

I just finished watching "Priest" and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a story about a gay priest and how he deals with this and his religious beliefs.

When it first came out, I remember the church condemning it and honesty don't see what the controversy was all about.

P.S. The guy who plays the priest, Linus Roache, is cute. And Robert Carlyle (from Fully Monty) plays the gay love interest. He was hot too.

Ha! I always thought he was a Man against Nature kind of filmmaker (as opposed to a Man rubbing up against Man filmmaker.) Hey Wet, have you seen My Best Fiend? It's Herzog's look at his and Kinski's love/hate relationship over the course of however many films they made together. Scraped from the editing room floor are some great studies of Kinski's rage and lunacy. Worth checking out.

Hello, Joey. Of course I saw My Best Fiend. It was scarey and hilarious. I've seen most of the Herzog films and still have difficulty relating the work to "gayness," whatever that means. I think the other posters are actually referring to the Kinski strangeness; while not specifically gay, it is certainly "other."

In a strange turn of fate (or real estate), Kinski was living in Ross, just north of San Francisco, when he died. An acquaintance of mine became very friendly with him and said the weirdness that comes across in the films only hinted at Mr. Kinski's pecularities.

P.S. If there any any Louise Brooks fans in the Bay Area, be sure to catch "Diary of a Lost Girl" at the Castro on Monday at 7:30 pm. I'll be there.
