Too many icons/not enough contrast

Hey there. . . i don't handle change well. But may I offer a friendly comment and observation? When i sign on, the unread messages are "highlighted" in a pale blue. It is very diificult to see, at least for me. May I suggest a higher contrast color?

 

Also, I have never understood the flags or icons that preceed the messages. All those symbols; what do they mean and are they necessary?

 

Thanks to Hoo and Daddy. We all await your refined and tweeked (or should that read "twinked") <G> improvements and anticipated corrections.
