Problem with 'new message' flag

Not every time, but often when I log on to message centre a flag comes up saying "you have a new message from ...........". When I click that icon my inbox comes into view, and the 'new' message (the latest one at the top of the inbox) turns out to be one I received three weeks ago and have seen about ten times because I keep being told it's a new one. Any ideas?

Same thing has happened to me many times and it is annoying.
