Hey there,

Its a warm one in Atlanta(mid 70's) today & I'm working on a trip up to the Washington, DC area--any input or suggestions would be appreciated. I always love "things to avoid" too LOL I havent been there since the boring HS trip. Thanks y'all:0)

I know I say this all the time :-), but what sorts of things do you like to do? It's a big city with lots and lots of stuff always going on. Knowing your interests would help narrow things down.

Hey SmallTownJohn,

The Smithsonian Museums, particularly The National Gallery and The Hirshorn, as well as The Air and Space, Natural History, and American History Museums.

The Holocaust Museum.

Several great galleries, if you're interested.

For nightlife, the seedy South East quadrant has 3 go-go boy clubs, Wet, La Cage and Secrets -- and a big dance club, Velvet Nation. All these clubs are in the same 4 block area, though it's certainly not the safest area of DC.

Lots of bars, restaurants, and cool hangouts in the Dupont/Logan area.

Unfortunately, there are no bowling houses in DC. (Except for 4 lanes in the White House) You'll have to go to VA to bowl. Or bowl with Bush.

Things to avoid: rush hour traffic, Republicans.

El Faro bar, in Adams Morgan. Fun latino bar.

Hi John,

Go visit the White House. And if you look close enough around the Bush there, you maybe able to find a Dick! :p

Excellent suggestions, Zach. Personally I really enjoyed my last visit to the Smithsonian and the NG. The Holocaust Meseum was very impressive too.

Enjoy your trip and have loads of fun!

Actually, just for the record, neither the National Gallery nor the Hirschorn are part of the Smithsonian museums. They are however located on the Mall with the big Smithsonian museums. There are also a couple of smaller underground museums near the Smithsonian Castle that have African art that are also good.

Of course any guide book will tell you all about all of those attractions, and if you like that sort of thing they can all be worth it.

It's a shame the the Washington Monument is closed, but for a view that's nearly as good go to the Old Post Office Pavillion and go up to the top of the tower. There's also the George Washington Masonic Monument in Alexandria right at the King Street metro stop which is quite interesting and has good panoramic views. If you can't know anything about the Masons it is also somewhat enlightening and the building itself is very impressive.

If you're staying in the Dupont Circle neighborhood it's fun just to walk around and look at boys. Plus there is lots of interesting architecture in that part of town. Good restaurants too.

If you like going to concerts there are several good venues around town. The 9:30 Club has lots of well-known rock acts and is recognized as one of the top clubs in the country.

You can also check out the Washington Post's website for lots of info regarding what's going on around town. The Capitals and Wizards both play in a nice downtown arena if you like sports.

The list really is pretty much endless.

If you would like to see some art but don't have the patience or interesting in wading through the big museums, you might want to try the Phillips Collection. Also, Dunbarton Oaks, has a small but choice selection of pre-Columbian art housed in a really spiffy Philip Johnson pavilion. Or if you want to see what high-style lesbians were up to in the early years of the century, check out the Romaine Brooks paintings in the Smithsonian's American Art collection (lots of beautiful young boys turn out to be beautiful young girls -- in drag). There is plenty to do in Washington to keep you busy.

DC is SUCH a fun town. Even if you don't go outside the city for the Civil War history, there's so much in the city that's fun and free.

And of course, don't forget ZachDC, Talvin DeMachio and Joey Hart. (And Joey Ciccone ain't far away, either.)

The seedy strip club area (in the shadow of the US Capitol building) is worth visiting just because it's in the shadow of the US Capitol Building. You'll giggle going in. I always do. Just when I'm going in to enjoy hot butts shaking in my face, Congress and the Supreme Court are probably deciding something really serious just blocks away.

If you get a chance, get out to Maryland and sample some true Maryland Crab Cakes. Get up to Baltimore -- it's only an hour away.

Late April/Early May would be better timing, but DC is just a great place to visit any time of the year.

Driving to Mt. Vernon in a convertible on a fall day just about sent me over the top. Surrounding DC is incredibly beautiful. And a great break from all the monuments, museums and history, which are all great, but can overload you. And there's nothing like driving back into DC at night and seeing the Lincoln Memorial. Makes my heart weep.

One other place that seems a bit overdone, but I found really interesting anyway, was the FDR Memorial. What it lacks in simplicity it more than makes up for in information. Something about a bigger than life scale model of Eleanor that got to me.

Hey Fedssocr1, you wanna wager a twenty on that?

Sure. We're both right and we're both wrong. The Hirschorn is indeed part of the Smithsonian, so I stand corrected on that one. However, I was just at the National Gallery last week. You can see their website here: http://www.nga.gov/ginfo/aboutnga.htm It's funded by Congress and was started by Andrew Mellon. Has no affiliation with the Smithsonian. Both of those museums are free. The Corcoran Museum also has a very interesting collection but it is not free (and is also not a Smithsonian)

So maybe we owe each other $20 :-)

Nope, if you took the bet you owe me twenty.

There all pretty cheap these days, and if you find something to bitch about, they readily upgrade your room. The Carlysle (near DuPont Circle) has rooms for under a hundred. Red Roof is $52.99. State Plaza $79.00. Check the internet.

Also, the Library of Congress is currently exhibiting it's collection of Japanese Ukiyo-e (translated as pictures of the floating and sorrowful world) woodblock prints, An ancient medium, some of the prints date back to the early 1600's, all are magnificent and speak of Japan's rich cultural history and obsession with beauty and the fantastic. It's free to view, so check it out.

Buzz in DC

Hey there,

Anyone have any info or knowledge about a club called Buzz in DC? BF found out Utah Saints will be spinning there during our visit. He's a HUGE fan!

Thanks,

RE: Buzz in DC

I think Buzz is the name of a particular night at Nation, like Vlevet Nation is Saturday nights, I think Buzz is Fridays. It's the big dance club in town.
