Madureira is north/northeast and is on the main line from Central Station. I went there in January when looking for furniture for my house. There are tons and tons of reasonably priced stores. It is a really different type of neighborhood, not at all like those in the Zona Sul. It is not favela level, but definitely not even close to Gloria or Botafogo. Sorry, but do not know a thing about the Astor.
