RE: 1.8 MILLION AT SP GAY PARADE

Latest reports have the police raising their crowd estimates to 1.8 million. That would make São Paulo the world's biggest gay pride event! That's an incredible leap for a parade that only began about six years ago, with a few thousand participants!!!

This actually may have become Brazil's biggest one-day event of any kind (Carnival is still a big deal, after all, but it stretches over several days). Politicians, who were in attendance at the parade, are certainly taking notice. This might help kick-start the stalled civil union bill in Brazil's Congress. The pols can count votes, after all! And the gay community in Brazil is becoming more open, more organized and more concentrated in important electoral strongholds, like São Paulo, Rio and other major state capitals where elections are decided.
