Well, the new operating system has been on the shelf for a few days now. My question is to those who upgraded (only) from a P-3 to XP. As my desk top system is P-3 running OS ME. Have you had any problems and is the new OS worth upgrading to?

Now to my Apple friends. I'm in the process of buying a mid-priced notebook and have seriously been considering the IBOOK. I have never owned an Apple and wondering if they're as good as touted. The notebook I'm looking at has a G3 processor, 256 ram and combo cdrw/dvd. On Aplles site it sells for about 1900. Would you go with the Apple or should I stick with a Windows system?

All feedback is welcomed!

I use a Mac Cube at home and Compaq at work. I vastly prefer the Mac. 10.1 is a beautiful stable operating system. I've never encountered any software that I ever wanted or needed that wasn't available for the Mac. (Yes, there's a lot more titles on the shelves for the PC, but is it anything you want to own?)

On the other hand, there are lots of little shareware and freeware titles that vastly improve my computing experience on my Mac, but I can't find them or any equivelent for a PC.:7

I won't comment on the choiceof a PC... my prejudice is already well known.

As for the Powerbook -- the IBook is much less pricey than the figure you quote (I believe) -- I would recommend the G4 model if you can swing the extra few hundred it would take. It will make a big difference now and eighteen months down the road it will make all the difference in the world. And they are giving free memory upgrades right now. Also, for referecence Check McMall.com, MacZones.com and MacWarehouse.com.

This post has been written an a G3 IBook...

Caveat: Choosing Apple with limit your spectrum of choices for software and some online service compatibility. I haven't found it a burden but it is an annoyance.

Consider with the Ibook the ability to use the AIRPORT, which allows you to be connected to the internet without wires. You can move around the house and even outside your house... and it never drops. It is a great device. It is DSL compatible as well.

I personally use a PC based system that i built myself. You can get much more power with a PC for your money. The new XP is SUPPOSED to be at least as stable as WINDOWS 2000, which is much better than any of the other windows9X and windows me.

Software wise, yes everything is really available for both systems. If you are looking at macs, i would definately go for the G4 processor, they are probably going to come up with something new and more expensive.. and you dont want to be at the bottom of the line that soon, with the G3 that is.

If you have any more questions, feel free to email me.

Experts I trust tell me that Windows XP is the first truly "must have" upgrade to Windows in several years. (But beware of Office XP.)If you've got the horsepower to run it (and it sounds like you do), you'll like it MUCH better than WinME.

I've been in love with Apple notebooks for years. They just plain get things right. They had the first actually usable touchpad, four example, when the WinTel world was stuck with touch pads so close to the keyboard that hitting the spacebar would cause a tap on the pad. Etc.

I own both PC and Mac desktop sytems, but wind up doing 95% of any work on the Mac (a G3 I picked a couple of years ago to replace my PowerMac 6600 - which is still running). As a graphic designer, I'm doing primarily lots of artwork and photo retouching, but my advice would still be to go with the Apple. I've lost too many hours of work at the hands of a crashing PC. Available software is not really a problem, but I guess it depends on what you'll be using the machine for.

I'm running XP and LOVE it. It's so much more stable than 9x and it's fast! Programs run twice as fast, and even better, my already fast cable modem connection is easily twice as fast as it was under 98. :D

Haven't used Macs in a few years, so I can't do a valid comparison. At the time I did use a Mac at work, I preferred the PC.
