I suspected immediately that "Donnie Darco" was a very black comedy disguised simply as artsy science fiction: in the middle of dinner his younger sister asks the family about the word 'fuck' . What I did not forsee was that the approaching dark cloud lacked turbulance. The young director tempered the cynisism with teenage angst and innocence, the hate with tenderness, and doomsday forecasts with hope. I expected a Scifi version of "Heathers", but I got a smart "Pump Up The Volume" only there were giant talking rabbits, vanishing airplanes, and end of the world type mahem. But through all this I felt surprisingly reassured, everything is going to be ok. Great movie.
