Is there a way to use those smiley face icons when sending e-mail? I currently use outlook express. THANKS:-)

You can use the icons when sending e-mail. They may just show up as text.

Most people used to receiving e-mail will understand :-) as a smiley face, or <g> as a grin.

And there's a slug of TLA's that have been around forever.

There are listings of these things all over the net. If you'd like I'll collect a few and get HooBoy to post them in the news section.

You may need to explain it to aunt Tillie, but do you really want to send her to M4M for the explanation? ;-)

Thanks deej...I've got all of the symbols, was hoping for some way to put the actual icon into the e-mail. Someone sends me an e mail on a regular basis with that Icon in it. He will not tell me how he does it ( his little secret.) Would love to get one over on his cute little butt with a smiley of my own :-)

I certainly haven't achieved 'geek' status but this should work in Outlook Express:

Save the image you want to add as a file, then

click options, then signatures, then add new, then under edit

signature click file, then browse to the image file you want added and you're in business!

Hope this helps. :)

Sounds like he's sending you HTML mail.

Go to Tools->Options. On the "SEND" tab, change the sending format from plain text to HTML. You can then embed graphics.

NOTE; NOT EVERYONE WILL BE ABLE TO READ YOUR MESSAGES. :-(

Some mail clients will simply display the text, stripping out formatting and showing graphics as attachments. Other mail clients will display an empty message.

But if you just want to razz this one guy, change the setting, send him a message, and then change it back to plain text. See if it works.

If you want to switch to using Outlook instead of Outlook Express, and then turn on the option to use Word as your e-mail editor, when you type the emoticon for a smiley face, Word will automatically translate that into a graphical smiley face. This also works for a frown, but I don't know of any other graphical emoticons.

I use Hotmail for most of my e-mail. Hotmail has a feature that lets you include emotion icons in the text of your e-mail. :7 There's a whole menu of icons to choose from. Your choices range from the usual smiley faces and frowns to things like thumbs up, thumbs down, and champagne glasses. I frequently include icons in my e-mails and more than a few people have told me that they enjoy seeing them. ;-)

Using Word/Outlook is an option, but the receiver needs to have the same combination. If the receiver is using Lotus Notes, for example, they'll get a different view.

Not necessarily. I send e-mails to people who don't have Outlook, and they see the graphical smileys. Possibly certain e-mail programs don't display them, but you don't necessarily have to have Word or Outlook on the receiving end.
