Guys, I was wondering what you all do to stay in shape and keep the weight off. I have went from over 350 (scale was maxed out) to 300 in a matter of about 8 months by eating mostly protein. But I seem to be stuck in a rut. I have been going to the Y to lift weights, how long does it normally take to see any improvement? As always I appreciate the advice.

Hi doc first of all well done on losing the weight so far as someone who has also been on a weight loss/fitness plan ,mine since Feb have lost 45lbs down from 252 to 207 which is about right for my height 6"5,what it sounds like is you have hit a wall where i take it you are still dieting as well as doing weights,if you dont mind i would like to ask a few questions

1.how much do you want to lose

2.did you get a medical check up before starting your diet/fitness plan

3.you say you are eating mostly protein ,what you should do is change to a more varied diet which includes carbs/protein/vitamins etc in the long it will help you lose weight and more importantly keep the weight OFF.

4.are you doing a varied weights plan different weights in different ways help the body do different things what is your ultimate goal re-weights if it is to help weight loss then i can think of better things than weights to help(aerobic exercise, swimming using other gym stuff such as rowers, treadmills etc help different parts of the body and stop you getting bored.

hope this is of some help i'm sure other people will chip in with other things Cheers Andy(could bore for England on the subject :)

unfortunately, my ultra-quick metabolism keeps me scrawny.

i think swimming might be a good idea. it gives you a nice non-jarring workout.

As the survivor of many diets all I can say is that it takes a lifetime of constant vigilance. It also takes a change to a realistic way of eating. The weight loss resulting from a special diet (for instance, mostly protein) has a way of popping back on as soon as the diet is over. Another depressing fact is that the body has a tendency to "remember" the higher weight and try to get back to it. Thus, overweight people have to consume fewer calories and excercise more to maintain their desired weight. Also I've noticed that I usually hit several plateaus on a diet where I tend to hover at the same weight before the pounds start dropping again.

I don't want to sound discouraging, but an unrealistic attitude toward weight loss -- and the terrible feelings of failure and depression that result backsliding -- are things that keep people from success.

In my case being diagnosed with diabetes caused me to change the way I ate and thought about food. When I finally came down to an acceptable weight I swore I would never regain it. Guess what? I did. I'm still within the same pant size and am starting to take the extra pounds off.

Good luck! It ain't easy but it is worth it.

There's lifting weights and then there's LIFTING WEIGHTS. If you have an intense 40 minute workout of lifting heavy weights, you'll lose weight. If you really want to burn calories then you'll have a heavy leg workout once a week. Legs are the largest muscle group and burn the most calories. After a heavy leg workout, you'll still be burning calories three days afterwards.

Also, it is CRUCIAL that you do 30 minutes of aerobics four times a week. If you do the aerobics and work-out three times a week (including one day for legs) and cut out carbs after 6:00 in the evening, you can't NOT lose weight. Just keep it up, and the pounds will melt off.

Oh yeah, one day a week you can eat whatever you want.

Fitfully yours,

FFF

I work out with a trainer 3 times a week and rollerblade at least

every other day. I TRY to eat lots of tuna and turkey, vegetables

and fruit. I stay away from pasta and dairy products. I use soy

milk on my cereal and drink at least a gallon of water a day.

At least a couple times a week, I'll have a pizza or a double steak burrito as a treat and eat desserts only when I go out to

dinner.

I also do crunches and stretching everyday. Plus, I get alot of cardio through sex.

Ditch your car, walk or ride a bike everywhere, don't eat crap, and swim like mad. Much sex helps too.

Best of luck to you!

Well I went a Dr. and he id doing blood test to make sure my body is hanling the protein ok. He was worried about my cholesterol going up past 331 where it was pre-diet. After my first checkup he was amazed. According to the test my cholesterol has been staying around 142 and the triglicerides are a mere 39 which is fantastic.

I now do cybex weights. I know it is hard and I need to keep at it. I appreciate all the advice. I use the protein eating plan designed by Prof. Brian Peskin of MIT. There are supplements that help your body cut the weight. His book is called Beyond the Zone. Oh and by the way, at first my physician was reluctant for m to try it, but he thinks it is ok now. How many carbs in spew, yum!

Looks like you've received a lot of good advice so far. I'll add the following.

If you're eating mostly protein, make sure you're drinking a lot of water to flush out the ketones produced by you're body breaking down the protein. Drinking the 8+ glasses a day will also help you feel fuller.

Along with a personal trainer you might want to consult a dietician/nutritionist.

Don't underestimate some of the psychosocial aspects of dieting:

--Visualize what you want your body to look like

--E-mail a friend daily (or every other day) about your progress. This might include what you ate the previous day.

--Make a conscious decision about what you're going to eat. Don't eat mindlessly or while you're doing something else. Enjoy the meal in the way a lot of Europeans do.

--Have a "cheat day". This doesn't mean going hog wild but give yourself a reward once a week.

--If you enjoy buying clothes, think of the new wardrobe you'll be able to buy.

I wish you all the best.

Personal Trainers in DC

since folks have mentioned personal trainers, i hope this isn't TOO terribly tangential. :)

what escorts in DC are also PTs? or, do any of the escorts here have any PTs they would recommend? basically, i'm growing tired of my scrawniness.

two things to keep in mind:

1) i have HUGE motivational problems. if i can come up with the slightest excuse not to go to the gym, i won't go. and i'm easily discouraged. if i don't see or feel any difference after a while, i get cranky. i have next to no fat to lose, so i think i should see definition sooner. i'm probably wrong, but that's my psyche.

2) i won't go to the bathhouse--oh, i'm sorry, i mean gym--results. it is just a quirk of mine, but if i'm going to the gym, i'm going there to work out. i'm not going there to cruise, to stand around & admire myself in the mirror, or to fuck in the showers.

I have gone from 420+ to 280, a point where I feel stuck...but I know it will pass in time.

I hit several plateus and managed to tweek my regime enough to break through them. The things that work best for me, in no particular order:

do intense cardio in the am..BEFORE eating anything. This way your blood sugar levels are already at their lowest and once you burn them, your body starts to burn fat. Make the cardio as intense as possible. During and after drink plenty of WATER. If possible, wait an hour before breakfast. Your body is still burning fat since you depleted the stored sugars....take advantage of this time..you worked hard for it.

Drink WATER..WATER...WATER and when you are through..drink more!

I try to eat 30% of my calories in the form of quality carbs...complex and vitamin rich. But, I do this all before the evening. I have 5 to 6 "small meals" a day. This can be inconvenient...but it keeps the blood sugar steady and really does keep the metabolism fired up. I eat my carbs at breakfast, midmorning snack, lunch and mid afternoon snack. For dinner and late night snack I have practically no carbs. Each meal contains quality protein, limited fats, and never do I eat carbs alone.

Lifting....getting the metabolism really fired up requires me to do a lot of lifting. Building lean muscle has increased my metabolism. A trainer got me into heavy leg workouts twice a week....brutal, especially at first, but they are the largest muscles in the body and when you get them working you can burn a lot of fat.

Those are just a few tips...It is a fucking battle that has to be fought every day with sustained intensity. It has taken me almost 2 years to lose what I have lost and I recently added swimming to my program to see if I can break through this prolonged plateu that I am on..about 4 months now.

Good luck.

DC,if we all had your problems :),the one thing i think you must overcome is the "I can't be bothered",whatever the problem losing weight, getting fit, even just putting on a few pounds of muscle, which IMHO is what you are after you HAVE to want to do it and do it BAD ,if you can think up an excuse for not going then of course you will never do anything but i am surprised that you have this considering what i have seen from you on a myriad of other threads you come across as a very bright, very determined individual.

On an earlier post you said you had basically a high metabolism ,well that can be dealt with medically it could be a medical problem worth looking in to obviously a lot of guys would kill for that sort of problem :) but none the less it could be a problem, there are drugs which will slow the metabolism down and will allow you to put on weight if that is what you want BTW how much do you weight and what is your height because it sounds at though so could be quite underweight .

Also if you are wanting to go the gym just to work out then fine,if anybody does hit on you give them a business card and tell them to phone you later :).

One last thing make you if you do see a personal/fitness trainer make sure that they have QUALIFICATIONS you can get degrees in sports psychology and nutrition and also they should have liability insurance, hope this helps a little bit GOOD LUCK Andy

RE: Personal Trainers in DC

thanks for the nice words andy :)

i am very bright, but i'm also hopelessly lazy.

also, about medication to slow my metabolism, i'm not sure i want to do that. right now, i can eat absolutely anything i want to. i'm extremely self-indulgent. i worry that if i slow my metabolism, i'll get pudgy because i will still eat all the "bad" things.

DC,

If you are interested in bulking up I would suggest checking out http://www.naturalstrength.com. Although this PT is not an escort, in fact, I didn't know if he's gay, he can made miracles happen for people who want to bulk up. He also runs an ad in the Blade. He has a private gym in ChinaTown so you wouldn't have to enter a bathhouse like results.
