If aomeone asked you what five cd's they should buy next, what would you recomend? Here are my choices:

Aretha Franklin - 30 GreatestHit

B-52's - Time Capsule

Anita Baker - Giving You the Best that I Got(where has she been?)

Blondie/Debbie Harry -anything by them or her(this one was hard

to narrow down)

Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now (incredible CD-covers of old classics and her own stuff-and shouldn't at least something by Joni be on a list of recomendations?)

Delerium(either Semantic Spaces,Karma or Poem)(all great fuck records) a great Vancouver duo consiting of Ryhs Fulber and Bill Leeb of Frontline Assembly and Intermix fame(well actually Delerium has been where they found fame:) Usually feature great female vocals IE Sarah Mclaughlin(another vancouverite: )

Terence Trent D'Arby 'Introducing the Hardline According too...' (a bit old, but a classic soul record if ever there was one)

Massive Attack (anything ...but Mezzanine is an essential)

St Germain

Primal Scream 'Screamedelica' Probably the first truely exctasy inspired record of all time.

Tahiti 80 'Puzzle' a 70's inspired album by a french band, if the partridge family were around today: )

Badly Drawn Boy 'the Hour of Bewilderbeast' Probably the best songwriter around today, truely inspiring.

Ok the list could go on, but these are off the top of my head essentials that everyone should have in thier collection. None of it is too hard, almost anyone could handle these.

Anything by New Order(new album Get Ready just came out BRILLIANT)FIRST ALBUM SINCE 1993!

have to disagree with Matt re Massive Attack Blue Lines is the essential album to buy (Safe from Harm and Unfinished Sympathy are FANTASTIC )

anything by the Pet Shop Boys (VERY) is the best studio album

Maxwell-Urban Hang Suite

D'Angelo-Voodoo

Both are great fuck albums

P.S Matt- Delerium ft Sarah Mclachlan -Silence (BRILLIANT)

No doubt i will think of some more-GREAT POST :) ANDY

I knew claiming Mezzanine as the best would bring out 'true' Massive Attack fans: )

I have had this arguement many times over, I stand by Mezzanine as the best of thier work. Though everything they've done is brilliant.

Matt(always on the outside)

PS Maxwell Urban hang suite is amazing too: )

And if you like Delerium, try Dead Can Dance, Deep Forest, Chicane.....

I have albums by Deep Forest, others albums to get IMHO are

1.Marvin Gaye-Whats Going On

2.Isaac Hayes-Hot Buttered Soul

3.Enya-anything

4.Peter Gabriel -3rd album(With BIKO)

5.Bob Marley-Exodus and Kaya

6.Fatboy Slim-all three albums

as you can see i have a VERY ecletic taste ! and music is a great passion,i too have had arguments re Massive Attack :)as they come from near where i was born (about 30 miles)i consider them a local band .Probably be back when i have been thru my CD collection :)ANDY

Not counting "Greatest Hits" or "Best Of" albums:

Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved A Man The Way That I Love You

Al Green - I'm Still In Love With You

Robin Ward - Wonderful Summer (VERY hard to find, 1963 "girl group" sounding record)

kd lang - ingenue (though I could happily live with many of her others as well, especiall "drag" or "absolute torch and twang")

Donna Summer - Bad Girls

Oh, no...how can I stop at only 5!!! (Those who have seen my cd collection will understand.)

I know what you mean :) 5 is way too small a number !

RE: 10 CD Recomendations

You are right Matt, I did mean Let's Dance. I guess in my choices 11 to 15 would include Tina Turner's Private Dancer. Oops-my fault.

No offence, but most of the items I've listed, can hardly be put under the 'rock' category: )

Delerium, probably on one of your 'dance' comps. One of the most played, yet least known groups around.

Terence Trent D'Arby, r&b before it was cool, Marvin Gaye meets James Browne.

Massive Attack, The pioneers of the 'trip hop' movement, and one of the most important bands in the last 20 years.

St Germain, if you haven't heard this, you gotta!!

Primal Scream , gospel drug induced deliciousness.

Tahiti 80 , pure pop fluff.

Badly Drawn Boy , the bob dylan of our time.

Yes I do listen to dance music as well, as I noticed in your list, but it's not the be all end all of my tastes. When I choose dance music, it's likely to be intelligent dance music, what does that mean? it's not your typical night at Twilo or Splash. DJ's of choice... digweed, tennaglia, wink,

if you like SASH... die die die. well ok I don't mean that, but there is so much more.

I think you're one of the cutest ment on this board and I'm completely in lust with you. However, rock has not (and will probably never will) gone out of style. Witness the recent (and continued) huge success of bands such as U2, Dave Matthews and Radiohead--to name just three.

I take music very seriously (not just rock) and, in my not so humble opinion, DJ compilations of circuit dance tunes are not music.

The first artist to mix opera and dance music, as far as I know, was Malcolm Mclarin. Who is better known as the 'founder' and manager of the Sex Pistols, and I beleive Bow Wow Wow.

He mixed the two genres on an early album that included M Butterfly, and went on to be the creator of 'Vogueing' with the song "Deep in Vogue"(No Madonna didn't create it: )

Malcolm Mclarin is a loud, obnoxious, pompous, arrogant prat, but there is no doubting his genius when it comes to swaying trends and his eye for the new and interesting.

I have been given a glowstick from time to time,

Posted

I too thought Dido was overrated, but after repeated forced listenings...all of my friends love her, I've actually grown pretty fond of the album, enough so, that I actually purchased a copy last week. Give it a shot it's actually pretty good.

I can't beleive someone on here would put Sisters in thier top 10!!! YAY! Gay men everywhere have been redeamed.: )

BigA You live near Manchester? I will be visiting London in oct... yes it has finally been confirmed, staying until the 22nd... let's make like a couple of slags and go for pints in our sluttiest clothes, make fun of some squaddie punters, get chased ...what do you say ??

Dead Can Dance are UK based, a couple of the members are originaly from Australia...I think: )

Lemme guess, you have a whistle too?

Oh my god it's circuit fever.: )

some "intelligent" selections from your's truly....

Kruder and Dorfmeister 'K&D Sessions' (wonderful chill out... gret sex record too)

Paul Okenfold, 'Swordfish' sntk. And actually the Planet of the Apes mix he did is amazing

Dzihan & Kamien I like 'Refreaked' But others swear by the original... 'Freaks...."

Deep Dish.... ANYTHING, they are brilliant. But current fave is 'yoshiesque two'

Private Lounge. compilation... nice mix of chilltastic tunes to bring you down gently.

one Glaring error I made earlier is not mentioning the Doves 'Lost Souls' incredible talent, may take a few listens, but well worth it if you like darker pop music.

other amazing unheard of artists... Swervdriver, scottish guitar band, sweeping soundscapes...

Faithless, Sunday 3 am is a classic(god is a dj)

Air, what can I say... innovative, original, cheesy in a way that only the french can pull off: )

Teargarden, dark dark dark ala Skinny Puppy, without all the screaming: )

Adamski, originator of Uk house music scene.... well in my opinion(discoverd Seal and was the original performer of 'killer', later made popular by George Michael.

Matt(now look what you've started... I could go on for weeks) (can you tell I like my music?)
