The thing I took away the most from watching this year's event is that wow a Hell of a lot of people died in music over the past year. They showed in-memoriams throughout the entire show. Didn't remember hearing about Jill Sobule, the first person to have a hit song called "I Kissed A Girl".

The visual stunner was how thin Jelly Roll now is, and how muscular Justin Bieber looks, waist up, and only from the back. Leg day, Justin.

One of the Supreme Court justices was in attendance. She did not win for spoken word recording. Biggest surprise to me was Lola Young winning an award in a big category, best pop, but not winning best new artist.

I posted this in another thread, but I was very disappointed in the quality of the vocal performances tonight. It took an hour and a half into the show to finally get a singer (Lady GaGa) who sounded worthy of singing at the Grammys… these are supposed to be the top 0.000001% of singers in the world; why did most of them kinda suck?

That percentage of great singers you list is comprised largely of people who aren't famous with their singing ability because they don't have the "look". My beef with the Gaga performance was that everyone who watches the Grammys already has heard that song, premiering during a commercial at last year's show, so I expect something new.

I forgot to add that it was amusing seeing the crowd's bored expressions when Cher, who received a lifetime achievement award, was rambling on about her mid-eighties' "struggles". Then, after accidentally leaving the stage and having to return, announces that the winner of the award inside the envelope in her hands was "Luther Vandross", who has been dead for over 20 years. (Although 2Pac keeps churning out albums, so who am I to criticize)? Cher probably had no idea Luther wasn't there. She did correct herself after that "La La Land" moment.

I don't think anyone who performed flat-out sucked, but clearly a lot of today's music is just not for me. K-pop dance group, Britney Spears copycat, Benson Boone sound-alike without the backflips, and lo-fi elevator music (hey, at least two people in the crowd thought that was cool). It's nice at least seeing a variety of different music I don't care for!

Exactly my point!
