I'm pretty out of the loop on how others handle this. But if anyone is able to demonstrate a serious commitment or reputation and work with my schedule, there's potential to make travel work.

Unless you just want to visit an area to see if there might be clients for you, I'd say the best practice is for the client to pay for your flight (or if in the NE Corridor your Amtrak fare). Nothing is perfect, but  If the client has paid in advance for your travel, that does imply a level of commitment for the meet up.
