The first time was great. The second time was not good. He was distracted by some family issues.

He then tells me he was having issues with his girlfriend back home he was trying to 'urgently' fix and apologized for the interruptions. Well, that deflated me, which deflated him, and the last 45 minutes was a waste. At the end of the appointment, he still wanted his full $200 fee - even though he knew he ruined the appointment. I gave it to him, not to cause drama - and he told me he 'owed me a free one' next time he was in town, which he planned on coming back in six weeks. Sure.... Shortly after, his ads were gone and never saw him again.

But still it killed the mood. I honestly don't think these guys get how a phone call can ruin the whole experience for the client. If I'm paying for a one-on-one experience with you at a premium price (no matter the profession), I expect your full, undivided attention for that appointment - whether it be an hour, or three hours. Same as when I go and get a haircut - I want the attention and focus be on me, and not the phone calls coming in (let it go to voicemail, and give them the attention when you're done with my haircut). I pay more for a massage than I do a dentist or doctor visit - and neither my dentist nor my doctor ever excuses themselves from my appointment to take a phone call. They get to the calls when they're done with me. I owned my own retail store for a long time - I promoted it as an upscale retail store with the emphasis on customer service. I always told my employees: the number one priority is the person standing in front of you with the cash in hand. If no one else is around and the phone rings, you don't answer - let it go to voice mail. We can deal with those callers later; you deal with the customers standing in front of you first ! Of course, that never happens when I'm a customer these days in any store. The day before July 4th, I went to 'Five Guys' to pick up lunch to go for myself and a few friends (you know - the place which cost $20 just for a burger ?). Anyhow, I'm at the counter and the girl asks for my order - as she is placing part of the order into the computer the phone rings and SHE answers it (even though there were others around doing nothing). She stops taking my order, and begins the phone order on another computer next to her. I look at her with an astonished look, and she diverts her eyes from me. While she's in the middle of the phone transaction, I ask one of the other workers to call a manger for me. The guy named 'Gus' comes out and asks what the problem is and I tell him. What does the 20-something manager do ? Laughs and says "No worries - it's all good." I asked, "All good for whom? Not for me, the paying customer in front of you who was placing an order for over $100." He doesn't offer an apology, just more laughter. I left and went elsewhere (a local family restaurant that offers delicious burgers at half the price). I did report it to their corporate office in an email, and received the standard reply of 'We will look into this matter'. Never heard back from them. I'm certain Gus got a raise for his excellent customer service. I'm sure the girl who abandoned my order got a big promotion. edinbrooklyn and NJF 2

I can’t get into the exact situation because it would reveal too much personal information of the provider. He had no control when the call would arrive and he had to take it for legitimate reasons.

Whether they are or not, let them go to VM and give those calls your undivided attention later. Better yet, power your phone off during an appointment. For the next hour or so, your paying client is the most important person to focus on.
