Any European members have trouble accessing websites?

We're visiting Britain, and I've gotten a bunch of error messages from websites, such as the Los Angeles Times, stating that their website can't work due to "EU regulations." Ignoring for the moment that the UK isn't part of the EU (I guess they still abide by EU rules?), do those of you in Europe encounter this problem often? Are there work-arounds?

I don't live in the EU, but given that VPN hides location information that might be a work-around.

As to why this is happening, it's actually the US websites that are blocking traffic from the EU because they don't want to abide by Europe's stricter privacy laws.
