San Juan brothel

During the '60s, I heard tales of a male brothel just outside San Juan. The working men and boys there were reportedly beautiful. Puerto Rico, at that time, was a major mecca for American gays, as was nearby St. Thomas.

 

Does anyone know any more about the brothel?

Male brothel near or around San Juan? Not on your life. In the 60s, yes, but that was on the other side of the island and long closed. There are plenty of gay bars and discos in San Juan, and I think maybe even a Steamworks somewhere but no male brothel that I know. Times change things and Puerto Rico is not the exception.

speaking of St. Thomas (well, it was quickly mentioned), we took a family trip to the USVI when I was still in high school (late 70s) and still very naive....we stayed at (I think it was called) the Frenchman's Reef, a big, resorty place....I'm sure many of you know it....we walked down the beach a very short ways and, suddenly, all we saw were only guys in Speedos....we later found out the neighboring hotel was a gay joint called, I think, the Morningstar Beach Resort....again, I'm sure many hear know of it.....

 

would be curious to hear if the Morningstar is still around and how the Frenchman's Reef is doing now, too....

Both the Frenchman's Reef Hotel and Morningstar are one big property currently under the Marriott flag. It is the largest property in the VI. Marriott put a lot of money into it after the last big hurricane hit a few years back.

I started going to San Juan just out of High School in 1975. My lover was a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines and he flew the Philly - San Juan route all the time as he spoke Spanish. I would fly down with him on weekends and The Condado and Ashford Avenue in San Juan were jumping. You didn't need a brothel. Just step off the curb in front of The Atlantic Beach hotel and you could have all the dick you could eat for free or for $10.00 if you wanted a Rent Boy.

 

A friend of mine owned The 1020 Club on Ashford Avenue and they had a back room. On weekends the Pueto Rican Hustlers with their huge cocks would show up and Mattie (the owner) would let them go into the back room and make a few dollars. They were good for business with all the gay tourists.

 

There was also Arcos Blancos resort for men which was toward Isla Verde on your way to the Airpott. That attracted a little more upscale escort types.

 

Then there were the Baths in Old San Juan that also had some Rent Boys as well, but I don't remember a brothel. Must have been before my time.

 

San Juan used to be one of the most popular destinations for gays on the East Coast. I was there recently and the gay scene was sort of dull. Nothing like the old days.

I firmly agree with the above lines. I found the gay scene in Puerto Rico quite different and bordering on blandness when I was there during the mid 90s.

 

When I was there, my friends and I stayed in a wonderful gay b n b in Condado (sp) area which was directly across from the beach; the location was great, but I was made to believe that Puerto Rico was jumping! Well, much to my chagrin, it wasn't anything that I had dreamed and yearned.

Puerto Rico is definitely a jumpin' place if you are into gay bars and discos and are still young and attractive enough to be able to pick up local gay guys. If you are looking for rent boys, those days are looong past. The few that are still hanging around gay venues are just looking for a few bucks for their next fix. Right now, the Dominican Republic is the place to go in the Caribbean (until Cuba is available once again) and even the DR isn't was it used to be 15-20 year ago!
