Issues with the Search function

Previously, I could paste the address of an RM profile and the results would show posts with that profile.  Since the Search function was updated some weeks ago, I get 10K+ results doing the above.  There are results for “http”, results for “rentmen” and results for every component of the address.

Anybody else experiencing this?

Read the tips I posted in:

The short answer is if you want the BEST results, you should not be using a full URL.  You should only be searching the username (because there are times people refer to a person without referring to their full profile address OR they use a a different address such as rentmen.eu.

If you're absolutely hell bent on searching for the full URL, wrap it in quotation marks and it will search that EXACT string.

I have a separate question, and sorry if it has been addressed before - the search string length - it seems like I can never find reviews or posts about some providers who have very short names, like "Al" (just an example) or if you write in "LA" for Los Angeles.  Is there a guideline @RadioRobthat I should follow?  I just learned that you can put in the masseur's number in the search (from his URL in masseufinder).  Apologies if there has been a manual on this - I'm just confused and kind of technically challenged!

The search system won't find results with less than 3 characters.  This is to cut down on the amount of effort to search through non-relevant terms such as "to, is, a, I, so, of, it, if".  It speeds up the searching pretty dramatically by reducing what it actually has to look through.  :)

However there are situations as you noted where you might want to search for a super small phrase such as "LA".  There is a technique that you can use here (and on many other site search engines as well) that will help you find what you're looking for.  An asterisk in search is considered to be a wildcard and anything can be in that space.  (For example if you search "bark*" it would match terms such as "barking, barkeeper or barkentine".  In this case, to find the short phrase, you would search for:

*LA*

Searching the above returns the following 10,000 results:

https://www.companyofmen.org/search/?q=*LA*

(Note: There are actually more than 10,000 potential matches, but the system only returns a max of 10,000 results to save resources.  It prioritizes the results it thinks would match best.)

Hi - is there anyway to search specifically within a forum? I tried with a tag, but that didn’t seem to work. Thanks!

Sure.  These are the steps:

  • Go to the main search page (https://www.companyofmen.org/search)
  • Enter the phrase you want to search in the "Search Term" field
  • Under Content Type, choose "Topics"
  • At the bottom of the Content Type section a drop down will appear with a list of the various forums.  Select which forums you want to search in.
  • Click the "Search Content" button to find the results.

The following link is for the word "specifically" found inside of this "Features & Feedback" forum.
