Here's an item from the Washington Blade that makes me smile. :-)

I hope the guy has to make restitution to the escorts he ripped off.

British man nabbed for failing to pay gay prostitutes

LONDON — Police in London have announced the arrest of a 37-year-old man suspected of hiring male sex workers and not paying for them, Pink News, a British gay news agency, reported. The man, arrested in Bangor, north Wales, has been linked to 17 offenses including counts of obtaining services by deception, two allegations of theft, one of administering a substance with intent and one allegation of rape. He is to return in May as police continue their investigations, the report said. Last summer support workers at SW5, a health clinic for sex workers, alerted police about a man who was hiring male prostitutes and not paying for their services, Pink News said.

To the best of my knowledge, prostitution is not legal in the UK. Assuming I am correct, how could the escorts register a complaint without risking their own arrests. And even if someone else had alerted the police, if the client is charged, the escort would have to show up in court as either the compalinant or as a witness. The whole thing sounds kind of messy to me!

OK - that could be - we have the same stupid situation in Canada.

But in the case in point - how do they prove the solicitation part?

Hey guys!

The legal situation in the UNited Kingdom when it comes to prostitution is somewhat similar to Canada. Prostitution is not illegal in the United Kingdom. (Whereas sex for money IS illegal in Canada, what is legal and licensed in Canada is Escorting, as in being paid for spending time with one's clients.)

The funny thing in the UK is that many things related to prostitution are illegal: for someone to benefit from someone else's avails of prostitution (So if you have children or a dependant boyfriend or a mother, you technically cannot give them money earned from prostitution without forcing them to commit a crime.), bawdy houses are illegal (so if a prostitute works off his or her house he is incurring in a crime), certain specific ways to solicitation in public are illegal, and of course, pimping is illegal.

Of course, not paying your taxes for the money earned by prostitution is illegal. So I do.

There is a lot of working being made on this laws, because it is pretty clear that the laws make clear that prostitution is not illegal, but make prostitution impracticable without committing some sort of crime.

As for the Famous Bangor client, unfortunately many escorts and non-escorts were his victims. I myself had to turn around on the way to seeing him because he got weirder and weirder on the phone when I was on my way to an overnight with him. I was contacted by a police officer in charge of the case and many escorts have been encouraged to speak up so this guy gets convicted. I got out of it almost unscathed but I know two guys who got not only burnt for weekends or long sessions, but also got stalked and threatened and personal information disclosed all by this freak.

I don't think all guys are going to come forth in the trial, but it is surely going to be a fascinating one.

Welcome to Europe... where a hooker can take a client on trial for not getting his money.

Let's see how it goes.

Juan,

Thank you for the claification of the prostitution laws in the UK. What you outlined was my basic understanding from what I've read.

It's lucky for you that you were able to avoid being taken in by this lowlife. Please try to keep us up to date on the situation with this trial. I hope that at least a few of the guys he ripped off and harmed will testify and make sure he gets what he deserves.

It's my understanding that you would have to be caught in the act of proposing that they have sex with you and with a specific referance to money or some other consideration being paid.

Don't confuse escorting with prostitution - legally they are two different things.

We have no laws against prostitution (and by definition, the word implies a payment of some sort - not necessarily money). It is the act of soliciting sex for money that is illegal.

Escorting for money is perfectly legal so long as there is no indication that sex will occur.
