I think (and this is just a supposition) but I am sure it is a conglomeration of different things. First, it something short of prostitution and the provider does not actually have to touch another guy. Just himself. Second, there is something intriguing about it on their end. We all have a certain ego. My point is that the internet makes it possible for desperate people to monetize different aspects of their life. Some are doing whatever they can to survive including cam performances for money.
