The film was never lost.

 

The article mentions technology caught up with the original mistakes that resulted in flaws trying to sync the audio.

 

What I recall from our local NPR reporting, after the film elements were properly integrated, Aretha Franklin did not agree to the terms, and so the film was not released. I forgot why she refused to go ahead. Was not that long ago NPR reported on this. 2 or 3 years maybe.

 

After her death, the filmmakers paid their respects to the family in Detroit, but waited until a little while and then came back to discuss the film with them. The family came to terms, allowing release of the film. First theater screenings were in LA and NYC last Fall.

 

It is screening here so perhaps is in wide release now.
