I have had numberous popups notifying me, that I am the Lucky winner of a 42" Plasma TV or similiar. But have never filled out the personal information requested for Delivery. Sometimes all I have to do is purchase a couple of small items from some other website tto qualify.

Has anyone here been the fortunate winner of a large Plama or LCD TV from such a POP UP?

All they want is your current email address, home address, phone number and any other info they can get out of you in order to make mailing and phone lists to sell to marketers. After you fill out your info they tell you to wait while they check to see if you are a winner or they tell you that winners will be drawn from the entries on such and such a date. You won't win a TV.Trust me.You may win some cheap prize and they will tell you that you need to provide a credit card number to cover the shipping and handling costs to send the prize to you.Don't do it.

It's called phishing and can lead to identity theft, one of the fastest growing crimes in the US EXACTLY because people are gullible enough to believe those popups.

Do not fill anything out. Do not provide any information. Close the window without responding.

Better still - get a pop-up blocker

Yup. Then you can completely trust everything that slips through!

I know you don't mean that. Even with a popup blocker, they DO manage to slither through.

Banks that you do not have accounts with do NOT need your SSN for validation. Nobody in Nigeria is really determined to send you money. You really have NOT won the lottery you didn't enter in a country you've never visited.

Just last week, two banner advertisements for spyware that were brokered through a third party appeared in Microsoft's Windows Messenger. There is no such thing as a trusted source.

If it sounds too good to be true, close the window and go on with life. You're not missing anything but identity theft.
