I see in the NY Times today that the move "Epic Movie", widely regarded as a disaster of a movie, has earned 29.4 million dollars in only 2 weeks at the box ofice. On the other hand, Pan's Labyrinth, which I think was the best movie of 2006, has only earned 21.7 million dollars in six weeks at the theaters. Why is this? Labyrinth has a lot that would appeal to a mass market. The acting is superb, the tale captivating. Is it just a lack of advertising? Why didn't you see it?

Because the American public is averse to subtitles? Because the studio didn't market it to teenage boys?

Is someone really suggesting that somehow, in spite of all of the evidence to the contrary, there is even a remote chance that American Pop Culture Taste would ever rise to the top rather than sink to the bottom?

I seen Pan's a few weeks ago. I agree, the acting was superb, the story was excellent, but I thought it was too graphic. I don't mind some violence in a movie, (I loved the Kill Bill movies and Sin City) but I was not prepared for the violence in this movie. I think Epic movie is a rental for me at best.

Epic Movie was on 2,801 screens and Pan's Labryinth was on 1,082, a large number for a foreign language independent.

Pan's became the largest grossing Spanish language film in the states this past weekend passing former champ Like Water For Chocolate.

Pan's stands at 21 million and counting.

RE: Murphy Movie Makes Mockery of Marriage

Speaking of movies, yesterday I watched Norbit, starring Eddie Murphy. I was appalled at the mockery this film made of the institution of marriage. Here Norbit, already a married man, starts falling for a girl he was in love with as a child. She not only breaks up his marriage, but (SPOILER ALERT) she marries Norbit.

What are the little children to learn from this kind of movie? Where is the Christian right when they are needed?

RE: Murphy Movie Makes Mockery of Marriage

That's one of the problems with the entertainment industry. Writers do a subtle brain washing of people or kids. People watch a show for example that they like, then the show starts running the odd plot here or there that, really has no redeming qualities, but because people see it on their favourite show, or in a movie starring their favourite actor, they start to soften their attitudes towards things like Marriage, or things like using four letter words, to express themselves rather than learning English.

Whoever liked Pan's Labyrinth should see the director's earlier movies Devil's Backbone and Cronos. Especially Backbone, which is nearly as good as Pan.
