I just finished the book, which I read when I saw it had been made into a movie. What a sick mofo the author must be!!! (and me for reading it all the way through) yes, a "surprise" ending to book. I wonder what the author was trying to convey (other than misanthropy). Lots of opportunity to film horror, sadism.

I for one, loved it.

It's funny. I read the novel when I was 18 and loved every bit of it. My experience was entirely different than yours, it would seem. To me this novel was an amazing allegory about Art, Religion and all human pursuits which have the only purpose of finding the essence of Beauty, and by that, find the key to Love; being loved, finding a way to make oneself lovable to others.

Of course, in the end, if Love has been ellicited by supernatural means, if Love is not reciprocated, it is so unfilfilling that there is no other solution for the main character than annihilation.

I have a big nose and I can smell anything, so to me it was a trip to have smells described with such detail. Also, as many people know in this message centre, I LOVE redheads, (would be more accurate to say that I am kind of obsessed by with them) so I felt totally vindicated by the author's lustful, lascivious, faithful description of the gorgeous redheads' intoxicating smell.

The movie overlooked really important aspects from the novel. (The main character, for example, should have been terribly ugly, making the ending all the more shocking), but I really enjoyed it. I was impressed by the director's ability to conjure olfactory memories with images. And the sequence when the main character is about to receive his fair punishment was thrilling, moving, delicious.

Not an easy task to adapt such novel, but I really enjoyed the film.

But of course, I missed all the "Rocky" saga, and don't quite like conventional, commercial films. ;)

RE: I for one, loved it.

You are right - I totally missed it. I have always hated allegories. and I did get bored with the descriptions of scents.

Glad you liked it and got the point!:-)
