So I'm looking at the Hotel Indigo in Chicago and it looks nice without being stuffy (I hate stuffy) and looks like it is in one of the neighborhoods too which is a plus. I like being eased into the hustle and bustle and not having it thrown in my face and staying in a neighborhood gives me a taste of the locals }( Has anyone else stayed at one of these hotels? I checked on tripadvisor.com and yes I know take the reviews with a grain of salt but the reviews were really glowing but wanted to see if anyone here has given one of the properties a whirl.

Hugs,

Greg

I was recently in Atlanta on business for two weeks and one of my colleagues was staying at the Indigo. He was not thrilled with it, and said the rooms were very small and he could barely walk into the bathroom and close the door behind him. And he's a tall guy but not heavy set. I seem to recall some other disappointments he had but don't remember the specifics.

As big as Chi-town is, you can probably do better.

Thanks for the tip jeddinger. As for small rooms I've accepted the fact that in many larger cities and my experience with Chicago it's just the way things are. A few years back I stayed at the Burnham and the room was much much smaller then what the picture showed but still nice nevertheless. I've got reservations at a few other places closer to downtown just in case.

My pleasure.

I will add that he is a bit of a "hotel snob" and was likely used to 4-5 star hotels. The BET Hip Hop Awards created a serious shortage of hotel rooms that week which is how he ended up at the Indigo.

Snoop and Lil Bow Wow probably got his room at the Ritz-Carlton.}(

I think that hotel is part of the InterContinental Group so its certinaly not going to be a dump. Maybe it's a rennovation of a historic building or hotel and that's why the rooms are small. I once had a room at the Plamer House while it was under rennovaion that was so small the bathroom door clearence was measured in millimeters.

Yeah I've noticed that with a lot historic buildings being converted into hotels. I don't mind the small rooms if the building is being kept up though. I love exploring older buildings and the beauty inside and out that is offered.

It's definitely an IC property. (Google Hotel Indigo Chicago and the first hit is them, oddly enough.)

From the limited pictures, I don't think it's a historic building but it may well be a renovation on the near north side. It's at (roughly) State & Division which means the L won't be far away, and you'd need it to go anywhere.

Interestingly, the site says they're near Wrigley Field, Soldier Field, United Center and Water Tower Place. Nothing in Chicago is "near" all of those but it's kinda close to a few of them. ;-)

Probably not a location I'd choose, unless I had a reason, but good enough. It would do.

If you ever want to TOTALLY lady-up, attend the Palmer House's high tea some Sunday. The society ladies show up in their cute little suits and pillbox hats, wearing their white gloves. Everyone must hold the tea THUSLY and eat the finger sandwiches THUSLY. It's a hoot to watch -- better than any drag show. And they say WE'RE outrageous! LOL

I had the misfortune of staying at the Westin Columbus in OH a few weeks ago. Fabulous old building, gorgeous lobby and public areas....and then I opened the door to my "suite". Dated furniture, dirty worn carpets, lamps with burned out bulbs, leaking toilet, etc

I learned a long time ago, in the hotel world, "historic" often means old and run down rooms. All the money goes into restoring the facade and public areas. There have been exceptions, but they are usually high end properties to begin with.

I sent a not so nice e-mail to the hotel and posted negative reviews on every travel site I could find.

Apparently a well deserved renovation is forthcoming....to be completed in 8-9 months. Tick...tick....tick...

Kimpton is great at restoring old buildings and still have great rooms even if sometimes they are a bit small but not all. If you haven't checked them out I would encourage ya to do so.

I saw that The Drake had a high tea too and thought about checking it out. Not sure though I would be up to getting the suit to the cleaners and putting it on but I don't think jeans, a shirt and my favorite tennies would be proper attire. Wonder what the old ladies would think me showing up wearing a wife beater and a jockstrap?

It would be interesting seeing the ladies' reaction if you showed up in a wife-beater and jock strap, but I'm betting the Drake's security wouldn't let you anywhere near them. You wouldn't make it through the lobby.

You'd probably end up in a holding room in the basement with burly guys named Gino and Bruno. (But at least you'd already be dressed for that kind of scene! ;-))

might I suggest something about 700 miles east-southeast of Chicago? :+

I stayed at the Indigo many times when it was the Claridge and in November stayed at the Indigo and got socked $329 for the night because the AMA was holding its annual meeting in Chicago or something like that. Yes, try Ambassor East or Ambassador West just a block over on State. Indigo is not worth what I was charged. The old Claridge was much nicer.

The Drake isn't that dressy---I've stayed there and never wear a tie even when I travel for business. The lobby bar is a very pleasant place to kill time in the evening or meet someone. They make a great martini. If you're a Hilton Honors member, you might luck out and get a view of the lake.

One drawback to the Drake is that it's a little far from the "L", and is at the far end of the Michigan Ave. shopping strip. OTOH, there are some nice restaurants and other diversions a few blocks in from the Lake.

I would agree that State & Division is not a great location, unless people are regulars on the "L".

The Intercontinental and Marriott are very convenient to the "L", close to the Loop and near the middle of North Michigan Ave. The Marriott has an odd layout and may be confusing for clients. The Intercontinental tends to have smallish rooms, but has a beautiful pool.

I've stayed at the Palmer House many times and always had good luck. In grad school, we managed to pack about 16 people into one of the normal 2 bed rooms. The tiny room probably would have one of the small suites normally used for sales presentations or small parties in big conventions.

Intercontinetal usually isn't shabby, but not what they were before Holiday Inn bought them from a Far Eastern conglomerate. Service businesses run out of Atlanta are almost guaranteed to suck to some degree (I used to live in Atlanta--think how bad your local Home Depot is).
