Our post Thanksgiving feast gathering enjoyed My Man Godfrey (1936), nominated for multiple Oscars. Enjoyed it. Superb writing and acting.

Though a screwball comedy, I saw the movie as a scathing look at the haves versus the have-nots, and the contemptuous nature of the idle rich.

In a modern light the movie was guilt trippy when thinking about today's Hoovervilles. I wondered whether it raised eyebrows back when the red scare was being conjured up in Hollywood.

A Hollywood classic! You ask good questions. I don't know if this made any one uncomfortable ten years later, during the Red scare. I don't think any of the principals were in hot water with HUAC, so I think it passed muster as just a screwball comedy. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who knows Hollywood history better than I do.
