G'day!

Think that I have found an hotel for 1-4 November, for which I will not have to take out a second mortgage. It is called the Jolly Madison Towers at 38th and Madison.

An Italian chain which I have never heard of. Rated 3-1/2 star.

Would be pleased with any info one might have.

Thanks and cheers!

Swallows22,

I've stayed at the Jolly Madison hotel in NYC a couple of years ago.

It's a typical italian style hotel. Avoid the standard rooms as they are really "worn out". I got lucky and was upgraded to a brand new suite in the Towers. I had no complains about it. But I read on the Trip Advisor site that people are complaining about the standard rooms.

Check out the reviews [a href=http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60763-d93470-Reviews-Jolly_Hotel_Madison_Towers-New_York_City_New_York.html]here[/a]

The Jolly chain is similar to other American-style chain hotels, especially the hotel chains you find closest to Turnpike exits and/or any major highway exits throughout the country. They offer a bare-bones, homogenized version typical of big hotels without much glamour, style, comfort, and/or individual personality (even though they are Italian owned). Their primary customer is the business traveler and families (on a budget) who need a quick, easy, and convenient place to stay.

I've never been in one but, if you drive the Autostrada (A1) in Italy, they're as ubiquitous as a roadside Marriott is here. Mr. Draker offers more insight about the NY branch than I can. Internet travel forums offer a ton of experienced-user opinions.

Ironically, the hotel that stood in this location back in the 70's was my budget hotel choice for vacations to NYC before I moved here. I can't remember its former name. The neighborhood is bland (Andy Warhol used to have his Interview offices nearby) but, if you like to walk, there's plenty to see and do within a few miles. And you might catch a cutie, future Tom Cruise stepping out of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, which is also nearby.

Have a safe trip.

But I would have stayed with you even if we hadn't had the suite!

The weekend of Nov 4-5 is the New York Marathon and hotel rooms are all at premium prices.

I was in New York for the US Open and will be back just before Christmas. Was able to snagg a decent rate at the Paramount in January and an okay rate at Hotel Giraffe in December. To do that, I spent hours and hours on the Interest checking discount sites and reading reviews.

There seems to be a major event in New York every weekend this fall, not just the first weekend in November. Despite the bad reviews, if someone is paying around $250 a night for the Jolly Madison, you could do far worse. Check the reviews for the Radisson Lexington Hotel.

RE: NY-Jolly Towers

Shall we assume that you are a John Stamos fan, alan? I haven't seen his jolly tower, but I did see his naked butt when he was the emcee in Cabaret.

RE: NY-Jolly Towers

I saw several other emcees in the Broadway revival of "Cabaret." Alan Cumming was probably the best. I was shocked and pleasantly surprised at how far Stamos was willing to go in the role, particularly with all the bisexual rumors out there. Stamos gave one of the most sexually charged performance I have ever seen on Broadway. Only two others that come to mind immediately: Maxwell Caulfield in "Entertaining Mr. Sloan" and Richard Geer in "Bent."

Oddly enough, I ended up staying at the Radisson Lexington hotel on my very first "working" visit to NYC a few years back. I wouldn't repeat even if I had to.

Regarding RockHard's remark about the Jolly chain - let me emphasize that in general their properties are better than any motel. I often stay at the Jolly Carlton hotel in Amsterdam which has a great location, some nice rooms and comfortable beds. }(

Now, I'm done with the accommodation and hotel postings for this month :+

Steven, just wanted to thank you for your input. And from the others.

I have confirmed the Jolly for 1-4 November at US$299 per nite.

The way other rates are, happy to have that.

Thanks again. Cheers!
