So the asteroid is not an asteroid but they don't know what it is. They were afraid if they nuked it that the fragments would crash to earth causing death and devastation.

 

So at the end it wasn't nuked. But when it got to the moon it looked to me like it splintered. So won't that have the same effect as if it had been nuked?

My guess is 1) we will never know for sure because there is almost no chance this show will be picked up for a third season... but 2) that it involved space aliens

Earlier when they were going to laser it the "asteroid" moved. So what if they had gone ahead with the plan to nuke it would it not have moved then too?

I believe Tanz wound up suspecting that, but his realization came late and he was still confused from his torture. Kind of like, if it is an asteroid, and if you hit it, and if it fragments... you will kill people. Another one of those lack of continuity problems that plagued the series.
